Star Trek: Beyond

Paramount just released the trailer to Star Trek Beyond. I am less than pleased overall.

Justin Lin, the director of the last 3 F&F movies, is at the helm of this bullshit and from the tiny snippet of Simon Pegg jumping out of a pod and hanging off the side of a cliff... it looks equally as campy as F&F.

Justin Lin, the director of nothing but remakes and sequels, is also the guy in charge of the reshooting (because there won't be anything new about it) of the Highlander movie.

I love Trek but this new movie series has been largely garbage. Little to no rewatchability at all for either movie. For the first time ever... I am more excited for something Star Wars related than Trek.

biscuits. Tea and biscuits. Or, crumpets if you prefer.

Scones are scotch and Irish origin.

Well, he's also a Star Trek "Fanboy". It's not like he's freaking John Logan or Neal Purvis or Steve Zaillian or any number of screenwriters or script polishers. He's Star Trek, through and through.

That said, it certainly doesn't look like a Star Trek movie, at least to me.

I had HUGE hopes for this movie when I learned that Simon Pegg was doing the heavy lifting on this script. While the interview that he gave stating that there is much more to the film than shown in the first trailer gave me hope... every trailer released for it has done nothing to build on that foundation.

There is little doubt in my mind that this movie is essentially... Star Trek: Briar Patch Drift.

Yeah, me, too. Well, hopefully the new series will be what Star Trek fans have been waiting for since TNG went off the air.

Such a shame for DS9 to get slighted solely because of how awful the first season and a half were.

Why would you expect someone (anyone, really) to stick with a show for 30 episodes before becoming "good"?

Most TV series that perform poorly, both critically and with ratings, don't last six episodes, let alone, 30 episodes.

I *tried* to like DS9 but it was boring. Maybe it became a better series later on but it lost me after probably 10 episodes and that was a struggle. I never connected with Voyager and I struggled to connect with Enterprise.

Actually, the only way I could stomach Enterprise was during workouts. I forced myself to watch the first three seasons. The fourth season finally got to a point where it felt like Star Trek, only to be cancelled.

The Vulcan chick in Enterprise had a great rack. It wasn't great enough to save the show, however.

There's very little defense of the first episodes, definitely. Having an actor like Avery Brooks play hopscotch as a plot device? Yikes. That's something they should have broken out once the show got its footing.

Also on the topic of Avery Brooks and the hot takes currently prevalent in America right now: how was having him be the first and only show lead to not be a "captain" from the show's outset?

It made sense within the consistency of the show, but gotdamn.

Anyway, the show became great once Ira(?) Behr, Ronald Moore and Robert Hewitt Wolfe were given the a sizable hold on the reins because Berman et al were focused on Voyager.

This list does a decent job of detailing which episodes are the ones one should watch to get a better handle on what DS9 brought to the table.

Given the weaknesses of the first two seasons, I'd go so far as to suggest that anyone start with "The Maquis" two-parter and "The Jem'Hadar" in Season 2 to give DS9 a first time viewing, then focus on the S3 episodes of "The Search" parts 1 and 2, "Second Skin" "Defiant", "Improbable Cause", "The Die is Cast" and "the Adversary". If DS9 isn't your thing, then that's that. But if it is, go back to the aforementioned list and watch anything labelled "Engage!" in Seasons 1/2 for the underlying character development and then proceed with Season 4.

Still have to wonder how much of the draft he submitted got the studio "treatment" notes.

I'm pretty sure that if a script polisher(s) was hired, Pegg would have said as much.

I always hated how 'Enterprise' looked shinier and newer than the original series despite being set before it. They could have done a better job of making it look more run down.

I always felt it look raw and ugly.

Plus, I never warmed up to the cast. Bakula was too much of a hardass the first three seasons and he wasn't very enjoyable to watch, for me.

He was missing his usual charm in the role.
