Star Trek: Beyond

Paramount just released the trailer to Star Trek Beyond. I am less than pleased overall.

Justin Lin, the director of the last 3 F&F movies, is at the helm of this bullshit and from the tiny snippet of Simon Pegg jumping out of a pod and hanging off the side of a cliff... it looks equally as campy as F&F.

Justin Lin, the director of nothing but remakes and sequels, is also the guy in charge of the reshooting (because there won't be anything new about it) of the Highlander movie.

I love Trek but this new movie series has been largely garbage. Little to no rewatchability at all for either movie. For the first time ever... I am more excited for something Star Wars related than Trek.

Apparently his vehicle had been recalled, specifically for an issue which caused the vehicle to slip out of park and roll away. But he never had it fixed...

Not sure why he would say you can't do a Cerebral Star Trek in 2016.

American culture at least, is probably "nerdier" than it's ever been.

Setting expectations. Outright admitting that this is not a movie made for long time fans, instead they are catering to Michael Bay fans.

your thoughts on Sulu being gay in this movie? I dont really care, but apparantly George Takei wasnt happy about it. Interesting.......

http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/n...icism-20160708

Star Trek actor John Cho recently revealed that Sulu, the character he plays in the reboot of the sci-fi series, will come out as gay in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond. The revelation is in part an homage to original Sulu portrayer George Takei, who himself came out in 2005.

However, although the altering of the character was penned as a tribute to Takei, the actor has stated that he wishes that the reboot hadn't taken liberties with the character painstakingly conceived by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry.

"I'm delighted that there's a gay character," Takei told The Hollywood Reporter. "Unfortunately, it's a twisting of Gene’s creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it's really unfortunate." Although Roddenberry was "a strong supporter of LGBT equality," he envisioned Sulu as heterosexual.

Despite not receiving Takei's approval, actor and Trekkie Simon Pegg, who co-wrote Star Trek Beyond and ultimately had a hand in Sulu coming out in the reboot, defended the revision to the Star Trek universe.

"I have huge love and respect for George Takei, his heart, courage and humor are an inspiration," Pegg wrote to The Guardian. "However, with regards to his thoughts on our Sulu, I must respectfully disagree with him."

Pegg added that Roddenberry would have allowed for some flexibility of the Star Trek mythology, especially if it meant including the LGBT community in the final frontier.

"Our Trek is an alternate timeline with alternate details," Pegg added. "Whatever magic ingredient determines our sexuality was different for Sulu in our timeline. I like this idea because it suggests that in a hypothetical multiverse, across an infinite matrix of alternate realities, we are all LGBT somewhere. Whatever dimension we inhabit, we all just want to be loved by those we love (and I love George Takei)."

Actor Zachary Quinto, who portrays Spock in the reboot and is openly gay, also applauded the addition of a gay character to the storyline while similarly expressing disappointment that Takei wasn't onboard with the tribute.

"As a member of the LGBT community myself, I was disappointed by the fact that George was disappointed," Quinto told Pedestrian.tv. "I think any member of the LGBT community that takes issue with the normalized and positive portrayal of members of our community in Hollywood and in mainstream blockbuster cinema."

It was yet another stupid idea by Hollywood.

Not sure I really care either way, but since everything else in this movie looks like it is going to be a disappointment (for me at least), I'll side with Takei.

And can someone clarify Quinto's statement?

He thinks WHAT about any member of the LGBT community that takes issue with postive hollywood/mainstream treatment of the community? Is he calling out Takei? Does he think Takei is a gender traitor?

It seems to me that there are two issues hand.

First, George Takei is concerned with the character. He said that it was wrong that Sulu was presented as gay in this movie, which meant he was closeted in the original series, since these films are before the 5 year mission.

Then there's Quinto, who's surprised at Takei's stance because as gay men in real life, it's nice when LGBTQ are considered normal.

So it's Real Life versus Fiction. IMO, neither man is wrong.

Most importantly (to the studio, anyway) it's more publicity for a film that's tracking poorly.

can't be worse than having Spock kiss Uhura

the need to sexualize every character in some way is getting out of hand though
