One thing that hasn't been discussed is Force Ghosts, Ren isn't powerful enough to call upon Anakin. This is is another plothole, because Anakin would set his ass straight. Luke could do this with Obiwan during his training while Ren who is training is almost complete is bitching and moaning to thin air.

No, Dane. That's just your opinion. Finn served a very important role in the film, and looks to be a major character through the entire trilogy. He provided a very connectable character that faced the emotional struggle of opposing genocide and senseless murder. He showed the audience that stormtroopers could be actual caring people under the helmet. A welcome addition to the mindless robotic approach of previous films, where stormtroopers are all identical faceless pawns simply meant to catch blaster fire and fly around during explosions while nobody gives a single shit about who they are. Finn provided a nice counterpart to Rey, and the connection between the two was very well done and leaves room for all kinds of interesting potential. Boyega did great, and I can't imagine the film without him.

Poe provided a hero leader within the resistance. Someone with piloting skill and leadership that other Xwing fighters could believe in while attempting a death defying attack on an enemy planet base. A role that Finn couldn't have even begun to fill in any aspect at all. Ridiculous to say that either were unnecessary.

You have invented a rule of storytelling that no one agrees with or follows: that the number of characters has to be reduced to a least common denominator. And you're criticizing the movie for not following this invented rule, which would of course make every story far less interesting.

Furthermore, you're criticizing a story about star fighters and heroes for introducing additional star fighters and heroes as characters. They could probably have introduced a brilliant, force sensitive lawyer, Doctor, and accountant. Then presumably you would have liked the movie, so long as they established to your satisfaction that they couldn't have made one combined lawyer/accountant/doctor and thereby satisfied Dane's lowest common denominator in characters theorem.

IMO, there are so many ways that the story arc could resolve, which is what makes it exciting.

But then again, that's what I thought about Episode VII, too.

To me, Finn is the new Han Solo character, but less roguish more slapstick. Poe is the new Wedge Antilles and had way too much face time in TFA.

Now as to VIII, Abrams and Kasdan both have said to expect a "weird" movie. Rian Johnson is an exceptional screenwriter and director but he's definitely not your usual "blockbuster" type writer/director (unlike IX's Colin Trevorrow).

I have no idea what to expect. I'll be happy if he takes VIII in a new direction, just as long as Force powers aren't given out like candy while trampling over everything that came before it.

It just glad that Abrams primary role is over.
I don't disagree. But from a business standpoint I would have done the same thing. The worst possible outcome would be to alienate a large number of the core consumer base by chasing down some storyline that they wouldn't be interested in. It would have a potential to be more successful, but would also have the potential to be catestrophic to the intellectual property. Look at Sonys mess with Spider-Man. They had a cash cow property and took the franchise In a stale direction. Then they had crap.

This was the far safer route and probably the better business decision, despite how much it sucks for the hard core guys.

That, sir, is the benefit to being a simple minded fool.
