There's no such thing as loyalty in professional sports anymore, and for good reason. He won his World Series, now he has every right to go and get paid. Billy Butler was another "face of the franchise" guy who was absolutely justified in leaving for what he was offered.

It's been fun Gordo. Give that money to Zobrist and seek for another solid outfield bat in FA.

Billy wasn't in the same league as the money we are talking about with Gordon. Billy wanted the extra year which we didn't want to do. Plus I don't think we made a really hard push at him since it seems we were eyeing Morales. Gordon will get at least four years no matter what.

I don't get some of this talk about finances either when it comes to professional athletes. Gordon has just fulfilled about a $40M dollar deal, he's very wealthy. He'd be financially OK if his career ended tomorrow, and particularly if he makes just his current rate for the rest of his career. Being old fashioned I guess, loyalty to an organization and a city isn't what it's about when there is more money than you can spend X 10 at stake.

about 80% that he's gone now?

You know some rich(er) club somewhere will overpay ... probably a team in our own division to **** with the Royal's team chemistry too. A double-dip.

Gordon is open to a home town discount but there is no reason he should have to make half of what he could which is what it would be if he continued at his current rate.

Exactly. Hometown discount doesn't mean getting insulted. It just means whatever the market turns out to be and what he can get, if we get close he will sign here. As long as it doesn't go completely bananas we should be in striking distance.

What makes you think any of those guys regret anything? You think Albert Pujols wishes he had 30,000,000 fewer dollars and lived in St. Louis instead of Los Angeles?

Gordon was coming up through the minors when I was actually getting seriously interested in baseball. He was the first real "prospect" other than Grienke that I was excited about seeing play.

I remember being pissed that they moved Teahen to LF so Alex could play 3rd. I thought it was ludicrous.

I remember his absolute STRUGGLE at the big league level, and his inability to hit any sort of breaking pitch.

To see how much he's grown - it's something special. I couldn't be happier for Alex.

I hope he's back as a Royal, but I'll also understand if he takes his talents elsewhere.

I love it when people talk about how other people should be loyal to their employers and leave millions of dollars on the table.

If I get a job offer tomorrow for $30,000 more than what I'm making now, I'm going to have a very serious conversation with my current employer...one that will end in me leaving if I don't get a raise. Alex could be looking at a $30,000,000 difference over the course of the next contract.
