Houston’s deal is really the only major eyesore in 2019. Get him to restructure and it will help a ton. Do that and get Sorenson off this team and it will be even better.

Well, Belichick would trade Houston and Berry for peanuts if he had to and he'd have never signed Watkins, or any WR, to a deal like that to begin with.

I will not be surprised if the Chiefs trade Houston to an NFC team, maybe the 9ers, for a 2nd round pick or later.

Berry could be sent sailing as well, but it won't be anything more than a 4th I would think.

I don't think any fans are considering the fact that our garbage D may become shittier if Houston won't restructure. Everybody likes to say the Chiefs need to make players restructure, but that isn't how it works if the agent/player don't want to.

We don't need their friendship, we need them to be active parts, in their own way, of wins. No excuses.
God Dammit! We need to go in to that locker room and take this team over!

Who's with me?!!!

Very true with the Watkins part. Pretty sure Watkins makes more than all the Pats WRs combined.

Now is the time to part ways with Berry. Get a young S in with a new DC and start it over. I like Berry but he isn't saving this shit stain we call a defense.

Made a Houston thread in the draft forum, but here’s another thought..

Justin Houston has made a major difference in 1 game (Ravens). Eric Berry has made a partial difference in half a game (Chargers).

We’ve lost 4 games by a combined 14 points and most of these guys, and Sorenson, have not been much of any impact. We have had garbage throughout this defense at the 2nd and 3rd levels and have still been this good with the 7th toughest schedule.

Maybe blowing this defense up means letting them all go, using their savings to bring in a bunch of new players (just like 2013) and starting over.

I've brought it up in other threads.....but we're currently projected to be around $38 million in cap space next year with no cuts.

Cut Berry (June 1st)
Cut Houston
Cut Sorensen
Cut Ragland
Cut Murray

That puts you at $57 million in cap space. That means you have to add starters in some of those positions....but you've got the cap space and draft capital to do it.

Only player there that's a big loss is Houston, and you might be able to get him to restructure.

Berry is a roster lock. He costs almost as much to cut as to keep. Houston seems 50-50 to be here. His production is nowhere near worthy of his pay, and we save $13m against the cap by cutting him.

EDIT: I guess I always forget post-June 1 which is an option, but still a sucky one. That's still a lot of dead cap over 2 years for a player they're obsessed with. I dunno.

Doesn't restructure usually mean adding more years to the deal already in place?

I see your edit, but Berry frees up starter's money if cut with a June 1 designation. Here's his 2-year release outlook with that designation:

2019 $16,500,000 - $8,950,000 = $7,550,000 cap space
2020 $13,500,000 - $6,000,000 = $7,500,000 space

As for Houston, here's his 2-year outlook if cut or traded:

2019 $21,100,000 - $7,100,000 = $14,000,000
2020 $19,000,000 - $----------- = $19,000,000

You're looking at +21.5 and +26.5 million over 2 seasons. That's enough to extend Hill and Jones. You could add another starter (or starters) for 2019 as well at about 10 per and then cut Watkins next year to cover 2020 and beyond. You still have the other $38 million in space to work with, which let's you re-sign Ford and bring in a couple more players.

To me, that's pretty significant.

Sometimes but that's generally termed along with extension. Usually it's converting base salary to signing bonus like Houston did a couple years ago.

And that helps us how? Because isn't the signing bonus the part that is the sticking point going forward?
