Yep...he should be the starter. Hyde was picked up before they drafted Thompson...they had no idea if he would be available at that time.

They paid Darrel before Hyde was available...so it seems Veach is hedging and staggering his acquisitions.

My guess is Darrel goes...if they need to clear a roster spot. Williams/Hyde/Thompson

This seems to be the most plausible explanation and take regarding depth. Honestly, what has Darrel Williams ever done during a game that’s made us think he has anything special? He doesn’t run with an attitude, doesn’t look to be particularly fast or shifty, I just don’t see why he would be viewed as a must-keep player. He looks like the quintessential JAG to me.

He's got a lower center of gravity. That's a good thing for a RB.

It's pretty clear Darwin Thompson will fit nicely in this offense -- another guy with speed the D has to worry about it. Hell, he could start opening day, and I don't think the offense would miss a beat, the system and cast is so good.

Last season I watched Phillip Lindsay get through the line and pick up extra yards and I wondered how he always did that. It’s like DL were faked out or something.

I heard a Chargers DL say that it’s so hard to play against him bc he is so short that he can easily get lost between the tackles.

Darwin Thompson is the same height as Lindsay, but he’s got the power and speed to benefit.

Dude is so short that he’s going to win the leverage game nearly every damn time

Lindsay with more power is a good comparison, I think.

Hopefully he gets there but that is probably the biggest concern right now.
And pass pro isn't the sort of thing you can do well 4 out of 5 times.

You whiff on one blitz pickup and your superstar QB can miss a few weeks. Or simply get hit and flutter a pass over the middle for a critical interception.

It's why I'm torn on the Fox/Colquitt thing. Man I'd like to free up that money, but it isn't their primary responsibility that concerns me. I think Fox can give us a reasonable facsimile of what Colquitt does as a punter, just as I think Thompson could give us a reasonable facsimile of Williams as a runner.

But as a holder, Fox worries me. Colquitt's steadiness there is incredibly important and I bet it's been huge in Butker's relatively smooth development. If Fox makes one mistake, it could cost us the season. Thompson, if he can't be counted on to make the right block 95 times out of 100, even if he isn't perfect in executing it, can't really shoulder the load.

It's the stuff on the margins that may decide just how much run he can get.

The fact that Fox didn't hold or punt at all in that preseason game is all I need to know. They're going to stash him and replace Colquitt after the season is my guess.

Pass pro is still the main reason I think Hyde doesn't get cut.

The holder part was brought up on Soren's show yesterday. I hadn't really thought of it, but it makes a lot of sense.

Especially where we are right now, a blown PK hold in the fourth quarter of the AFCC game would be pretty devastating.

Soren made a good point though - putting a specialist on the PS is a pretty good indicator to the rest of the league that they may just wanna grab that guy. Especially when it's a specialist that Toub has had his eye on and has given his stamp of approval to.

I think if they try to stash Fox, they'll lose him. Some bottom of the barrel shit team will need a punter due to injury or the shanks (happens every season) and they'll take a flyer on him because it's an easy way to steal someone else's homework. "Well shit, these guys probably have the best STs coach in the league and he thinks the guy is worth keeping around, lets sign him to a cheap 2-year deal and we're not out anything if it doesn't work..."

I think we're kidding ourselves if we don't realize that poorly run organizations will gladly piggyback on the efforts of the better organizations in the league. That's probably why the Vikings gave the 5th to get Baltimore's kicker. I mean hell, they spotted Tucker and Lutz, even Hauschka, Gano, Stover and Gould before that. The Ravens clearly know something about kickers so if you're the Vikings and clearly don't, you just cheat off their homework and get yourself another K.

So what can the Chiefs do to keep him around? You can't carry 2 punters on the roster.

If you'd just pay attention to me rather than be a condescending assbag, you'd have thought about that a week ago.

I mean shit, you QUOTED MY POST when I mentioned it last Monday.

Nothing.

You keep him now or you lose him, IMO. I mean you can try to stash him and hope. Or have him 'pull a hammy'.

I mean look at it this way - if he gets cut and signed to a PS or even sits on the streets for a few weeks, that's a couple of game checks he won't get. Meanwhile, if you IR him, he gets paid his rookie minimum for the full season. He'll almost certainly make more money by just saying "Yeah, I felt something grab on that last kick...." than he would by going into FA.

And you tell him to spend the offseason practicing his holds because he's your guy in 2020. He'll end up money ahead and have a job with the best STs coordinator in football.

I mean...if he's patient and willing to gamble a bit, that could really be the best possible outcome for him.
