We’re about to have $40m tied up at RG and MLB.

Didn’t we laugh at the Colts when they did this with Nelson and Leonard?

(I don’t mind this Bolton extension, though)

Would you feel better if we had $40m tied up in WR's instead?

Oh yeah, we don't have to, because our best two are on rookie deals.

And we dodged a bullet since the 2 of the WR could have been sharing a cell

Yeah that is my restrained excitement. LB and interior OL should be the places you can find the most value for in the draft. But he’s young and it’s not the worst price tag so… meh

Well could be worse. We could have it tied up at C.

Oh wait.

The Colts won 1 SB with 27 years of HOF QB play.

Those two weren't in their top 10 mistakes...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I think I’d rather have two Hollywoods on prove-it deals than one Trey Smith with a $30+m cap hit in 2028 tbh

I like Bolton and this signing doesn’t upset me. It does remind me of when the Colts three best players were their RB, LG and MLB though lol

We’ve got Mahomes and no CB, LT, or EDGE on a second contract so we should be able to get away with it as long as we draft well.. but I’d feel a lot better about things if we were talking about extending a young LT and pass rusher.

I’m just having fun. Pay your players who’ve earned it.

It’s just not ideal to have you largest cap hits (outside of Mahomes and Chris Jones) going to C, RG, RT, and a couple off-the-ball LBs

We won't be paying $30m to Trey Smith. There'll be an extension, and a conversion to signing bonus or what have you.

It's not a problem.

We have limited cap space for the next couple years. They’ll most certainly backload Trey’s contract heavily, meaning some $30m cap hits in year 3, 4, etc.

Jawaan’s got a $27m cap hit and his APY was only $20m.

It's not even close to the same comparison man. They also didn't have Reid, Mahomes, Kelce, Jones, McDuffie, Karlaftis, Creed, Rice, Worthy or a GM as good as Veach.

Not a valid comparison whatsoever

Of course it is. Our highest cap hits currently, after Mahomes and Chris Jones, are going to RT, RG, TE, C, an off-the-ball LB, another off-the-ball LB, and a DE with a career high 6 sacks. At this point, Kelce and Tranquil are underperforming relative to their contracts. Many would make the same claim of Jawaan. Trey Smith isn’t likely to outperform his.

Mahomes (when he’s playing well) and Reid are great deodorants but if we don’t draft well over this next year or two we could be in some real trouble.

In fairness, I think that's pretty much every team.

You're only ever 2-3 underwhelming drafts from being up shit's creek.

if Kingsley and Hicks establish themselves as solid starters, we're in okay shape. But if they don't, both the 2023 and 2024 classes would have to be seen as sub-par and at that point if 2025 also becomes something of a 1-player draft, you're in trouble.

But everything changes if Kingsley is a good option at OG (or OT) or Hicks steps in and gives us what Reid did. And maybe FAU becomes a solid player and/or Conner steps forward if asked to play FS rather than that odd nickel role.

The book isn't closed on those drafts yet and they could still pull themselves up to average to good. If they don't then yeah - we could be in trouble. Because again, 2-3 underwhelming drafts in a row will force ANY team to go heavier into FA than they want to and that's always going to be extremely expensive.

It is. And I want to note that I dropped an “lol” in my original post hoping to soften my tone. As I mentioned, sometimes you’ve just gotta pay guys, positional value be damned, and figure the rest out as you go..

It’s just funny commentary on team building philosophy.

… and I won’t lie and say that I wouldn’t feel a lot more comfortable if our largest cap hits were going to LT, CB, etc. instead. After all, it is generally much easier to find a serviceable RG than a LT.

I’m also preemptively grieving this whole Trey Smith contract. I really hope I’m proven wrong but this is just not how I would have handled this thing.
