I’m not sure this should be a movie given the source material. It’ll be odd if Warner Bros doesn’t green light the second part.

I have always been of the opinion that it should have been done as an HBO miniseries with six hour long episodes.

Part One - character/situational introduction, ending with the Atreides forces departing Caladan.

Part Two - Atreides arrival on Arrakis. Attempt on Paul's life. Thopter flight/rescue of workers from the spice crawler. Banquet where Kynes shows that he is sympathetic to the Atreides cause.

Part Three - Harkonnen/Sardaukar attack on Arrakeen. Yueh's betrayal and death. Death of Leto and Piter.

Part Four - Aftermath of Atreides defeat. Hawat's capture by the Harkonnen forces, Halleck signs on with the smugglers. Death of Idaho and Kynes. Fremen discover Paul and Jessica, Paul's duel with Janus and the Fremen reaction to his "giving water to the dead" at Janus's funeral.

Part Five - Feyd Ratha's gladiatorial fight with the Atreides prisoner on Giedi Prime. Introduction of Alia. Paul takes the water of life. Paul's reunion with Halleck.

Part Six - final battle of Arrakeen, breach of the shield wall. Death of the Baron and Hawat. Paul's duel with Feyd Ratha and ascension to the imperial throne.

Anyway, that's how I would have done it. Each episode would have a good natural stopping point.

I have a similar work up/treatment for the Malazan Book of the Fallen sitting around somewhere (except seasons rather than episodes, but the volume is as large as all the Dune material put together, if you include all the Brian Herbert stuff).
