It doesn’t work like that. Trades don’t just happen because you want them too unless you’re willing to overpay.

sure it does.

Good drafters do it all the time. If the guy they want will last longer they move down. If the guy they want won't last to their pick they move up. Really good drafters pick up more when they move down than they have to pay when they move up so all the moving around doesn't cost them too much.

You have to have teams that want to move down or teams that want to move up. They don’t materialize out of thin air.

of course

Teams can't make every trade they want. Some are just better at finding a good trade partner than others. Some teams know the stupid teams and trade with them.

There are going to be several trades at the top of round 2 tonight, almost always is.

It will happen today.

Some teams have bad traders who give away the farm to move up a couple of spots, Chicago trading up 2 spots to get a shitty QB for no reason. Some guys are smart and always seem to gain more than lose when moving around. They trade down for 3 picks and then move back up for 1 pick and still get the guy they need.

Interesting that Minnesota tried to trade up to get Darrisaw but ended up getting him at 23 anyways.
Sometimes you are wrong about having to trade up. Or lucky, I guess.

This makes no sense. Why wouldn’t they have just taken him at 14 when he was available if they wanted to trade up for him?

Well they dropped down to 23 picked up a ton of picks and still got him, thats why.

Vikings tried to move back up for Christian Darrisaw before landing him at No. 23

The Vikings came into Thursday night’s first round with a lot of draft capital and they added more when they went on the clock for the 14th overall pick.

A trade with the Jets netted them the 23rd pick and two third-rounders while costing them a fourth-round selection. The Vikings then sat back and waited to see if their preferred player would get to them.

General Manager Rick Spielman said “we were a little tight in the draft room” during that wait because they worried someone else might tackle tackle Christian Darrisaw. As the tightness grew, Spielman said he tried to make a move that would ensure Darrisaw landed in Minnesota.

“Once we got down to about four or five picks, when we went down to 23, we did try to go back up because we wanted to try to make sure that we got Christian,” Spielman said, via the team’s website. “We were unable to. Fortunately, we did not have to. We were able to keep our extra picks that we gained and still got the player that we coveted. So, it worked out very well for us.”

The Vikings now have four third-round picks and three fourth-round picks, so trading up into the second round could be part of the plan on Friday night.

Ohh so they tried to trade up from 23. I thought that meant they were trying to trade up from 14 at one point and proceeded to trade down as opposed to taking him there.

Kind of crazy, went down to 23 started getting scared, tried going back up then got him anyway. Risky but rewarding. You never know...

Maybe they didn't think they had a shot because LA was going to take him so they traded down and then had an "oh shit" moment when he fell into the late teens?

Nah sounds like it was after they were already sitting at 23 that they looked into trading up, not at 14.

Also, didn’t they made the trade when they were on the clock and LA had already picked? And I don’t see any way they didn’t know LA was taking Slater. That was obvious.

That's what I mean. Maybe they traded down to 23 thinking of going in a different direction, not thinking Darrisaw would fall that far. Then when he did, they kind of panicked and tried to trade back up.

The thing that doesn't make sense - if they were worried he wouldn't fall all the way to 23, why trade down to 23 to begin with? Why not take him at 14 if you couldn't get a trade that didn't move down so much?

Sounds like the Vikings aren't very good at this.
