It’s a Pats move.

Age, health, contract, and scheme fit are all issues.

Players with big money contracts rarely take less midway through the deal.

I can see Dirty Dan taking a pay cut, tho.

Well... Houston is in a different situation. Berry has leverage because cutting him is a huge cap hit. Houston doesn't have leverage because he knows he's an easy cut. Players won't hand over guaranteed money. But it's not uncommon at all for a player nearing the end of his contract to extend to a much cheaper contract by basically turning base salary into bonus. Houston is a lot more worried right now about his next contract than his current one.

Houston will get more than the Chiefs can afford on day 1 of free agency. His next contract won't be hard to get. He has zero reason to restructure when he could hit free agency by forcing them to cut him.

He has 2/32 left on his deal. He’s not getting $16M/year on the open market.

However, he might get 3/24 with decent guranatees. I just think it’ll be elsewhere.

The last year really doesn't matter. The question is if anyone will pay him $16m this year. If you turn that into a signing bonus, that's a very reasonable number in the open market.

He got $32M guaranteed on his 6 year deal.

Hell no should he get $16M guaranteed next year. That’s ascenine.

The guaranteed money factors in signing bonus (much of which has already been paid off in salary cap) and his 2015 and 2016 salaries which are already paid off. He's no longer guaranteed anything. The Chiefs can cut him and not owe him anything. All they'd take is the dead money from cutting him early which isn't a ton at this point.

LOL.

Houston would easily get $16 million + on a 2-3 year deal. Smarten up.

It’s his cap number the Chiefs cannot manage right now at $21 million.

I just don't see the Chiefs not trying to keep Houston. Maybe they're threatening a cut so he'll restructure. Or maybe they demanded a restructure and he refused. Forcing a restructure or bust is the right move... I just hope they're trying to keep him if possible. I'd love to have him at the right price.

I hope this wasn't your "big feeling". I understand the cap hit, but good god I'd rather see Ford and Berry go.
