Q: Is it difficult to make a change at coordinator that has been on the staff for a long time?

REID: “I think I will just let that slide there. That is not where I am at. Probably the wrong question to ask right about this time.”


Q: How comfortable would you be if you got to the point that Mahomes had to start next year?

REID: “I am not there. That is not where I am at. I can tell you what is real and that is he got to play, which was invaluable. He got the chance to be in a room with Alex Smith, which is invaluable. He loves to play the game. He got a chance to play a couple weeks ago and did a nice job with it. I am not there with anything other than that. That is what is real right now.”


Q: If Matt Nagy stays, will you keep him as the primary play caller?

REID: “I don’t know about that part. I thought he did a nice job, but I don’t know about that.”

Yes. How can people not understand this? If the Chiefs telegraph that Mahomes is their starter next year and Smith needs to be moved, his value drops. This isn't PhD level negotiations, people. More likely than not we never here that he's being actively shopped and then one day BJ Kissel is breaking news on a deal.

As for his other answers, the guy is just pissed and doesn't want to commit to anything when he's emotional. This I'm fine with. Being level-headed enough to bite your tongue about forward progress? Much less fine with.

I admit I don't like that Nagy answer but maybe he is trying to diminish him a little bit in hopes of keeping him here. That is the only reason that I can think of for him saying what he did.

I think thats a bad idea. Sure you may be able to win a few more games initially with Smith, especially if Mahomes struggles, but your only delaying the inevitable. Reid and his staff need to be all in on Mahomes. This off season is the right time to turn the page.
