I did watch it as it originally aired in 03, and my recollection is that even out of order it was clear three or four episodes in that it was gelling in a way that Buffy and Angel didn't until their second seasons.

I just looked up the aired order and 3rd through 5th episodes aired were Our Mrs. Reynolds, Jaynetown, and Out of Gas, so yeah. I remember there were references you didn't get in those episodes, but nothing that prevented you from following what was happening. It didn't really get confusing until after Out of Gas, when they jumped back to show the episodes they skipped.
