Let's talk trucks

So, my son is about to turn 16. I've got a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. It's been paid off for a few years and ha 130k miles. I think I'm gonna give it to him and get myself a truck. I'm leaning towards a 2017 F 150. I don't want a Ford vs chevy debate. Just looking for opinions from guys that have one. Any input? Thanks

I should add that I've been looking and seeing them with end of season rebates that make a stickered $53k truck running about $44k. Sound good?

What do you use your truck(s) for besides work driving?

I live in the country. Cut firewood and haul, I hunt, and pull a trailer up to the farm with a compact tractor quite often. I also go camping a few times a year. The Tacoma has a shell on it for that but I probably won't put one on this truck. I figure we can use the Tacoma for that if need be.

Hoping to hear from CPers that have late model F150s. Issues? Looking at the twin turbo 3.5 L v6. Test drove it and it gets up and goes. Tows well too. Hoping for real life review

Purely anecdotal, but the only guy I know with that motor has had trouble.

I'm a Chevy guy, but I'm asking it to do different things than you are.

I'm always wary of anecdotal evidence. Toyotas are supposed to be bullet proof. My tranny shot craps at 68k miles, 8k miles after the warranty ran out. Go figure. Otherwise been a great truck. Had an 04 F150 and it was great., but who knows bout the new ones.

One thing to consider is that turbos usually require/suggest premium fuel. Mileage is pretty good on those eco boost turbos, but it changes the economics a little. I have a Ram 2500 Cummins so can’t offer any experience with an F-150 ownership-wise. I have driven them for work and find the seats to be uncomfortable, steering too twitchy, and visibility poor for a truck.

He didn’t say. Just that it had been in the shop 3 times in the 6 months he’d owned it. I’d presume electrical or computer problems. If they were pulling the engine out he’d have been even more pissed.

Again, purely anecdotal.

I have a '14 f150 with 60k, have the 3.5 turbo. Bought the extended warranty for 1200 bucks after I bought the truck for peace of mind. No major issues at all

if the Tacoma is a nice truck by the kid and Crown Vic to drive for a while...Yes in the country they need a car but why a $20k truck?

Get him some solid transportation and drive your truck for a few more years.. You are paying for college right?
