I worked at McDonald's in 1999-2000.

Worked Hardees all through HS, from 16th BD on, did everything but make the biscuits. Worked 1 summer of college at McDs across the street, just running drive thru.

Can't remember if I ever even went back line at McDs. Seem to recall clocking in on my drive thru register. It was quite the blur as I was their best at handling lunch rush, so that was always my shift.

I've always wondered:

1) What percentage of customers in general were assholes?
2) Of those who were assholes, were the more aggressively assholian more likely to be a certain stripe of individual?

Ironically, the biggest assholes I came across in fast food was an employee.

They hired him in the morning. He looked like one of the Sweathogs, maybe a little young Stallone tossed in.

The put him on the grill. Then in the middle of the shift, I shit you not. He peeked out from the box opening between front and back line and asked a customer 'how you doin' and when she didn't respond he pointed and yelled, 'hey, yo, **** YOU!!'

- and that, as they say, was that.

Mostly, I remember the elderly regulars. They were a pleasure to serve, even though they waited out endless cups of coffee.

There was also a family of regulars who trod the line between cheap and poverty stricken. They'd order a side salad and split it, then ask for hot water and mix in ketchup packets to make a pseudo tomato soup.
