Talking Draft Prospects

We've got perhaps the biggest, most consequential draft coming up for this franchise since 2008. The Chiefs have all seven of their picks, and will certainly be picking up an additional four in compensatory picks, one of which is assuredly a 3rd rounder.

As a result, it's important to familiarize ourselves with as much of this draft class as possible. I started a thread last offseason that discussed late rounders that was generally well liked and spurred tons of great conversation on all sorts of draft picks we normally wouldn't talk about, so I'm going to duplicate that idea this year, only discussing all talents, rather than just the mid- and lower-round ones.

The OP will be continually updated to show the talent I'm reviewing by position. Keep in mind as I list these players that I am generally listing their round projections, but it is not a strict big board, as I likely won't have a big board put together until May.

Spoiler!

I don't know shit about him, but are you talking about the guy getting pushed back by the defender with illegal hands to the face?

Yup. Watch that game. He struggled massively in pass pro.

Matias looked solid tho.

FS Gerod Holliman, Louisville -- The vast majority of the people who follow the draft are Casual Fans, who don't bother watching any game tape. There is nothing wrong with that, but it does have necessary disadvantages when it comes to draft season. The most obvious one, of course, is that some player will inevitably seduce the Casual Fan with a flashy statline, regardless of how he might have actually performed on the field. Gerod Holliman (6'0", 200 lbs) will be #1 on the Casual Fan dining menu, and for good reason: he tied the Division I football record for interceptions in a season with 14 -- fourteen!!! -- and stacked up 60 tackles through the season. That is outstanding production, and it is legitimately the result of excellent speed, great hands, and above average ability to read routes and QBs. The downside is, I may have never seen a bigger pussy on the football field. Holliman is a horrid tackler -- not only is he a completely soft bitch who shies from contact, but he ACTIVELY RUNS HIMSELF OUT of run plays on many occasions. This is a guy committed 100% to the deep safety assignment, and if you run a defense that only asks your safety to do that, he could have great value. But on the vast majority of teams that ask their safeties to make plays against the run game, there's almost nobody more pathetic. You're essentially down one player in the run game so long as Holliman is on the field, and that's likely not going to change once his NFL opponents are bigger, faster, and stronger. Would not draft.

CB Trae Waynes, Michigan State -- Right now, 2015 is shaping up to be a difficult year at the top of the cornerback's big board. There's only two consensus cornerbacks that have 1st round grades from most people, and that's Florida State's PJ Williams and Trae Waynes. Waynes is primarily en vogue right now because he sports an excellent height-speed combo, at roughly 6'1" (with very long arms) with legit 4.4 speed. Waynes has some great fundamentals: he plays off-man extremely well, cutting off the receiver to get to the ball first on any crossing routes. He's also brilliant at using the sideline as an additional defender on any and all outside routes. If he reads your WR's move to the outside, it can legitimately be over as he guides the WR wide and swallows him up against the sideline. This trend will struggle to continue in the NFL. Waynes is listed at 200 lbs, but he looks like a skinny 170 out there -- he has a very thin frame that makes Phillip Gaines look thick. He also is so successful due to his incessantly aggressive nature -- he is constantly clawing, grabbing, and running over WRs he's covering, so he is likely going to be a penalty machine in the NFL for a while, and it's not entirely clear if he'll be able to grow out of it. Other than his slight frame, he should blow up at the Combine, and a team will likely fall in love with him enough to take him in the 1st. I'd be awfully wary, though, as his frame and his overaggressive defense would give me cause for some concern.

White is a waste in Round 1. (Vince Mayle is the better receiver, bigger, faster, better numbers in the same system with less around him in a better conference. I like White, but he's basically Dwayne Bowe v.2 without the physical presence. I wouldn't spend a first round pick on White.)

Clemmings won't make it out of Round 1.

Kendricks might not make it out of Round 1.

I don't watch nfl draft prospects very closely, don't have time nor the want to really.

All I do is watch and follow on twitter. That's where I've seen those players mocked, projected.

Okay, here you go:

vs.

vs.

vs.

Interesting to note, Mayle was heavily recruited by Holgorsen at WVU and ended up at WSU with Leach in what is basically the same system.

All four of these guys are very similar. Not really very good get off or acceleration, but high point the ball well and run good routes. (Parker times/highpoints as well as anybody I've ever seen, but he just doesn't have the burst.)

A guy who has really good start speed and can glide down the field is Dres Anderson. Not as thick as the previous guys, but better speed.

Sammie Coats also has terrific speed, but is pretty raw in terms of routes, hands, etc. I think we just signed a guy like him in DaRick Rogers, so...

We've got pinball speed guys in Albert Wilson and DeAnthony Thomas. We've got a stretch the field dude in Rogers. What I'd love to see is a bigger, possession receiver who can actually catch the ball and run routes. Those first four fit the bill, though I'm not sold on any of them as a better football player than the possible trench guys that will also likely be there with the #18 pick such as LSU OL La'el Collins, Miami OL Ereck Flowers, Notre Dame OL Ronnie Stanley, UW DL Danny Shelton or FSU DL Eddie Goldman. (Florida State CB PJ Williams would also be acceptable with this pick.)

Personally, I don't think that any of the four offer the upside that Donte Moncrief did last year at the same size/position, but that's another argument altogether.

If I was wanting that guy, Mayle in the second or third (where he is projected) is a better alternative than White in the first, IMO, especially if we were to come away with an immediate high level plug and play guy like Collins on the offensive line.
