And you're still wrong about that. You still don't have any inkling of how progressions or reads work; you don't understand route concepts; and yet you still continue to come here and post inane bullshit 24/7.

lol the arguments....
John, you say Mariota doesn't make "reads." I argue he makes great reads. What you might want to suggest is that he doesn't make "progressions." They are two different things. If his offense doesn't require complex progressions, then that really isn't a fault of his per se. |

There have been several QBs of late that come from similar offenses and are in the same mold as Mariotta. None of them have done very well. Maybe I'm stereotyping him? Maybe not? BTW, it's me Mugs. Good to see you around dude. |

I think that's what you want to look for when you're talking about it. Spread offenses look very complex but the QB might only be going through a short progression, say a 1, 2, outlet, even though there might be 5 receivers. This might be because they know the pass rush won't allow them to go through entire series of reads. He might read the CB to see if he jumps the #1 route or the #2 route and throw away from him. Let's say #1 is a 7 yard curl by your Z, #2 is a flat route by the TE, and your outlet is a drag by your slot. Here's a pic... If he reads the CB first on the #1 route, then if the CB sits for the #2 route and lets the Z go into his route, then he'll read the SS to see if he's jumping that route. Likely if the CB sits, he's throwing the curl. If the CB takes the #1 then he has to read the OLB to see what he's doing with the #2 route, and likely the QB is throwing the flat. If neither is open, he'll begin to roll out and look to his outlet, his slot on a drag. We are assuming now the SS is over the top of the curl, the CB is underneath and the OLB flowed to the flat. This leaves the read on the ILB versus the slot drag, if its there he throws if not he looks for his Y to block the OLB on his roll and he picks up some yards with his legs. So you have "reads" individually on match-ups and a "progression" through those reads. |

I see where you're coming from. We are on the same page. Essentially, any QB should be able to make reads. Especially after they prep in the flim room all week.
Progressions are definately what I am talking about. I watch heads the first couple of times I watch video of QBs. You can see them make the progressions 9 times out of 10. He struggles with the progressions just like Geno did. Also, The problem is the relying on his legs type of deal. That seems to happen way too much with these guys when they get into the pros. They either get hurt, throw a pick, or shit their pants in the pocket. it's a big risk imo. These system guys aren't working out lately. Also, I think the ceiling for a guy like mariotta is an Alex Smith type career. He is a guy in the same mold as these others. It took him a long time to come around. Vic Beasley Dante Fowler Jr. Alvin Dupree 1 of those 3 may be there when we pick and I'd take them over any WR at that spot unless Parker, White, or Cooper is available. I would be hesitant to take DGB in the 1st if he is available, for all we know he could be the next Josh Gordon/Justin Blackmon. La'el Collins the only OL player that I would realistically want at that spot. Goldman and Shelton are the only interesting defensive fatties around that pick. I don't think that PJ Williams makes it to our pick so that kind of rules out a CB in the 1st because I don't think Waynes is worth a mid-1st right now and Ifo is too small for this scheme. The value is better at corner in the 2nd-4th rounds. At safety, Collins will likely go in the top 10 if he times well. No other safety is really worth a 1st round pick in the top 20 but Prewitt probably has the best shot of getting in there if he times well. Holliman is a freaken pansy tackler, the worst that I have watched so far. There are some nice options in round 2-4. The kid I really want is Tartt, just something about him makes me think that he is going to be at least above average in the NFL. |

Please don't draft Tre Jackson. He's Cyril Richardson. Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.
This dude got owned like this all game long. He's the RG in that gif.
