frickin dog question

so, the son and his wife went to some kind of money managing class. they came up with a plan on how to get out of debt and build a new house(i'm 57 and never been out of debt). anyway, the main part of the plan is for them and the 3 grandkids to move in w/the wife and i. actually, no biggie...grandkids usually stay w/us every weekend, and we know they're going to get older and not want to come out as much. life.

so, they sell their house and move in w/us 2 weeks ago. everything seems to be working fine, except the 3 dogs they brought w/them. used to living in a fenced in yard and sleeping in the house. i've got 30 acres for them to run wherever they want, but they seem to be happiest laying on the wifes ****in patio furniture. holler, scream, shake a stupid can w/rocks in it(dumbest idea of all), to no avail. the wife went to town and bought some spray shit for $40 and sprayed it all over the furniture saturday. yesterday morning...yep, they're laying on the patio furniture. she sprayed it again, but i know they'll be back.

so...surely some of you guys/gals have experienced this before and have a solution besides antifreeze and/or bullets? they're pretty cool dogs, really, but the wife is driving me ****in nuts over this.

Alternatively, you could trench around the fence and fill it with concrete or rock. Then put fill back over top of it. If the dog wants to dig under, I gotta believe she'll give up when part of it also includes digging under 18 inches of concrete.

Virtually all electronic fences have a 'swath'. The line essentially puts out a signal for X inches on either side depending on how you have it set up. So you can put it right at the fence line and set it to a 36 inch swath and you'll end up getting 18 inches on either side. Usually the first 3-5 inches of that zone will be a 'beep' zone where the collar gives a quick chirp and if they get inside it, that's when the juice starts. If there's already a fence there, that dogs not going to stand there getting the juice while it digs, especially not if you ramp up the intensity.

Mine will occasionally break ours just to jump in the lake but it's a rare occurrence. With no fence, they can get a running leap, take a second of zap and then break the charge zone. So you just have to turn it up enough to make them REALLY not want to take that second of zap. Far more often they hear that chirp and know to step back. Frankly, if I'm not fishing or leaving the property, I don't bother to put their collars on them because they do not **** around with that charge anymore. But even that wouldn't be an issue here as there's an actual physical barrier as well.

The problem with the invisible fence will be cost. You're going to be a few thousand into it for a quality setup, IMO. And on extremely rare occasions (you have to have a comically smart dog for this one), they'll walk the line listening for the beep, then lay down near it, let it beep until the charge dies and then get to digging. I could see that being an issue if your dog has all day to figure it out. I'd suggest you just never let the collar die so they never learn that it's an option. Like I said - you have to have a damn smart dog but Aussies are known for that kind of lunacy.

And LOL at letting the battery die. That's like something my dog would try. He's a dick. But I think he wouldn't be patient enough. He'd probably find some damn way to short it out, or short the fence out or something. He's not particularly patient.

Turn it up higher. And increase the pulse rate.

My younger lab is dumb as a bag of hammers and he's seemingly impervious to pain. But when I maxed out both settings, that dog hit the ground like he'd been shot. He's a lummox so he's constantly running into stuff and he doesn't yelp but he'll run around screaming like he's on fire when he hits that edge.

Like I said - on occasion he'll see something that he really REALLY wants to go for and he'll deal with it, but the things aren't designed to just throw a dog out there and forget about it. They'll never be physical fences.

They're impediments; something you put up just to make sure the dog thinks long and hard about the decision it's about to make. They get a bad enough jolt often enough, they'll start making different decisions in short order.

It would be more than enough to deal with this situation. Like I said, that dog's not going to sit there and get blasted for the 15 minutes it would take to dig out.

Yeah, when we bought ours the guy had it set up about 8 feet from the property line with a 6 foot path so it took about 11 feet off the back of my yard and for the whole 120 ft length. I'm not about to give up 1,000 square ft of running room for the dogs so I had them come out and re-trench it. They ran the fence right wire along the water line (lazy ****s actually wrapped it around my lights rather than dig down; I presume because they couldn't run a trench with two wheels hanging over the ledge; that's what spades are for, ass). I cut the swath down to 3 feet so there's a foot right at the back of the yard that they don't venture into.

They also had it well inside my eastern boundary so I had it re-run there as well. All told I probably opened up 2,000 sq feet of yard for them. The previous owners had a little dog and probably didn't give a damn.

In either event, there's no need to be conservative about placement, IMO. Put it right at the outer boundary of your property and if you want to have it 'in' further, just set the shock zone wider.

I had a couple of goats I used as weed eaters. They broke out of their fence and spent an entire afternoon eating the wife's plants, my fruit trees and shitting on my deck. Do you know how much a couple of goats full of fruit trees, alfalfa and hosta plants can shit in an entire afternoon?

Both my buddies gave up on it. It wouldn't work no matter what they tried, and they got tired of paying the city when their dogs got loose.

What I am hoping is that it just trains her to stay in the yard unless she's on a leash, like my first Aussie did. I don't think she's persistent enough to work out letting the collar die. It's not like she digs out every day. It's just been often enough to be a pain.

But is she tried that, she would run into the actual fence.

Also, there are some companies now that the collar will keep shocking them if they go through the fence, so that doesn't work as well.

honestly, I don't care if those people were al queda pimps....

The problem with those is that it gives dogs just a little too much credit. After awhile, they kinda forget why they're being shocked or what they need to do about it.

It can lead to them just getting disoriented and bolting. It's not generally a great idea, IMO.
