Job Advice On Postion Offered

So I applied for an open position with a company. As part of the application I gave my minimum accepted salary. When I received a phone call from them to set up an interview I asked what range they were looking to pay. Their answer: "I haven't looked yet but we are within range of what you put down for your minimum or we wouldn't have called"

Okay, fair enough. So I go to the interview. At the end of the interview I ask the HR person, "what range are you looking to pay?". I get the same answer of we have to pull numbers and this and that but what you are asking for is within our range. Again, fair enough.

Today I get an offer 10% below what I stated as my minimum accepted and told that is the highest they can go because the position is that and not that.

So I'm kinda like, WTF happened to "within range"? I asked twice on two separate occasions what they were looking to pay and both times I was lead to believe what I stated as a minimum was close to an acceptable level. I understand coming in initially below my stated minimum but this sounds kinda shitty, really.

Worth negotiating? I do want the position but I am not hurting nor in desperate need for it either.

Can't say I agree. If I'm being asked to go to Seattle or Phoenix or St Louis to work a project, money is discussed 5 minutes into the conversation. Everything I do is through a contract house, but I don't see what difference that should make. The terms of employment are crystal clear immediately, so I don't see why hiring in direct to a company should be any different. This is the job, this is the pay, take it or leave it. The way these guys are doing it is chickenshit.

I'm not in the same field but another way I have seen the "minimum" thing handled is HR asking what you are currently paid. General rule of thumb is it takes at least 20% over that to pry you away is you are happy with your current job.

Because employers want employees who want to work for their company and not just a paycheck so when a job comes along that pays a little bit more they're not out the extensive money it takes to train someone.

That sounds good from the employer aspect but that's it. It's a two-way street. Here is my minimum I am asking. If you can't meet that then everything else is moot because as much as I may like your company, I have bills I have to pay.

A better way to accomplish that is by not treating the employees like garbage once they start working for them.

That is why you research. There are plenty of job sites such as glassdoor that list ratings for employers or similar. When they look to hire, they are looking for the best fit for the job. If you're immediately looking at wages, they're thinking all you want is the money.

I'm not saying that there is not a time to talk about the money. What I am saying is the initial contact is not that time.

That being said, they offered you something. Counter their offer, explain why you are worth more, fight for your 10%. Show them that you want to be part of their company and why you are worth the added investment.

The real question is are you asking for a reasonable wage? If so explain sol

IMO, that conversation could tell you a whole lot about the company you desire to work for.

Um, I'm not quite sure how offering someone a job at 10% below their initial asking price is treating someone like garbage. Please explain.

Yeah, I had someone reach out to me on LinkedIn from Tampa a little while back, even though I've just barely updated my current employer info with job titles and dates. It would have been quite the challenge with the long list of skills they were looking for in one position, but I couldn't stop thinking "am I going to be 24/7 on-call for all this shit?!?"
