Job Advice On Postion Offered

So I applied for an open position with a company. As part of the application I gave my minimum accepted salary. When I received a phone call from them to set up an interview I asked what range they were looking to pay. Their answer: "I haven't looked yet but we are within range of what you put down for your minimum or we wouldn't have called"

Okay, fair enough. So I go to the interview. At the end of the interview I ask the HR person, "what range are you looking to pay?". I get the same answer of we have to pull numbers and this and that but what you are asking for is within our range. Again, fair enough.

Today I get an offer 10% below what I stated as my minimum accepted and told that is the highest they can go because the position is that and not that.

So I'm kinda like, WTF happened to "within range"? I asked twice on two separate occasions what they were looking to pay and both times I was lead to believe what I stated as a minimum was close to an acceptable level. I understand coming in initially below my stated minimum but this sounds kinda shitty, really.

Worth negotiating? I do want the position but I am not hurting nor in desperate need for it either.

My former company did this to people all the time and it drove me bat shit crazy. They would ask what you wanted to make, you'd say "120". Then they'd say that's within range. Then they'd throw out 110. If you took that your offer letter would say 105.

Needless to say, that's why they are my "former" company.

What profession are you in?

Pretty much this.

I am to the point now where I only work on deals I want to work on. It's a good feeling, but you don't get there without a lot of gut-wrenching, sleepless months, and aging yourself quicker than you want. I had a 10-yr clip where the stress seemed non-stop. I'm happy to be where I am at today, and my Family seems to like me better as well

I know some people use the "minimum required" to ask for what they want. Those people are what you call, reading impaired. I always state the minimum required because that is what is being asked of me. And it is irritating when they know what I am stating as a minimum required and come in well below that.

If you are happy where you are at-I would pass on them. If they wanted you that bad they would not have low-balled you right out of the gate.

My last "job" did that-and I took it anyway. It was a nightmare from the start. Combative work situation, ignorant bitch as a boss, no training, no breaks-I dreaded going to work.

There are lots of jobs out there- that 10 percent makes a huge difference over the years-raises, bonuses ect. Good luck at whatever you decide.

I promise you, Pete would not be unhappy with this job.

HR is kinda funny though; I should know, it took me almost 2 years and interviewing for 3 different positions here before everything worked out. I'll probably work here until I die.

You made a fatal flaw of giving them your MINIMUM of what you would accept. You ALWAYS, ALWAYS,ALWAYS wait for them to make a first offer and try to get more. You probably low balled yourself.

You also seemed like you asked so often about pay and when I interview people, that turns me off the most.

You should know the market, the skills you possess, and the pay you deserve. If you can't do that, you need to work on those three things and go in with confidence and sell yourself.
