Make plans on doing everything possible to improve the OL, or cut/trade Alex by Thursday.
This OL is currently a big pile of shit that few if any QBs can accomplish much behind. Adding Maclin would be wonderful, but still.. everything starts in the trenches. No OL = no QB = WRs basically useless

That 5 year period allows a ton of flexibility and really, it's possible he did us a HUGE favor.
Look at it this way and as simple as possible (no roster bonus stuff): 5 yrs, $55 million. Let's say we gave him a $20 million signing bonus, which would be pretty damn massive. That essentially says that we have $4 million in signing bonus money on the cap every year and leaves us 5 years to cover the remaining $35 million. So how about 1, 4, 8, 10, 12 as the first five years of the deal? Seems like a relatively reasonable breakdown, no? So cap hits of $5, 8, 12, 14 and 16 million. If he's healthy, the first 3 years of that are relative bargains, especially given the way the cap is trending. You bail on the last year and eat $4 million in dead money. He's guaranteed $33 million in the first 3 years of his deal (good for him) and if he's been productive in year 4, $14 million won't be prohibitive. I believe he could've done substantially better than this on the market, especially in light of the actual cash spending mandated for a handful of teams in the league.

He'll get 2 years but he has no guaranteed money left in 2017. He also has a $2 million roster bonus due in '17. So if he can't rise to the occasion in '17 they cut him (post June 1). $3.6 hits the cap in '17 with another $3.6 in '18. They free up just a bit north of $13 million and walk away. You being reactionary doesn't mean everyone else is just being ignorant. There's a pretty obvious out in the contract after 2016. Smith will have 2 seasons to prove he's worth the next 2 on his deal and the Chiefs have taken the first step towards ensuring there are no more questions to answer by then.

I think he's cut in 2017 no matter what. Unless he brings a SB to KC in the next 2 years.
He's locked into guaranteed money for the next 2 years. So like I said, whether he makes it happen with Maclin or not it likely wont have an effect on how long he is in KC. |
