We have discussed it in various committees, including broadcasting. We had a full discussion on the floor with the owners and other executives this week. I think there’s a tremendous amount of interest in this, possibly even to the point of support, but there are also things we still want to make sure we do it right. We’ve been very incremental in trying to do this, but we believe competitively it could make even our races toward the end of our season even more exciting with more teams vying for playoff positions, which is great for our fans. We still want to do some additional work, including talking with the players association. We have a scheduled meeting set for April 8. This will be one of the things we’ll probably discuss and then we’ll also have to talk to broadcast partners and there are some scheduling issues that we still need to work through.”

It seems unlikely that the league will expand the playoffs for the 2014 season. But it looks like it’s going to get done in 2015.

I'm not sure I like only one team having the bye. If you're going to make this thing a crapshoot, let's go all the way. It will definitely get more teams involved in the overall playoff race.

The argument against expanding is you are probably going to slide the "drama" in the final week to a bunch of teams fighting for 7-9 to 9-7 records. The AFC has only had 6 teams with winning records each of the last two years.

What is the point of a "regular season" again? Might as well just have a 32 team single elimination tournament.

I didn't say I was a fan of the idea... but 8 teams is the max without adding weeks to the season. Why stop at 7?

Heh. Guess I'm just going to have to accept the fact that the regular season just doesn't have as much meaning as it once did. All pro sports leagues have become like this in some capacity. Early regular season games are just placeholders to make money.

Just make it AFC vs NFC. AFC Plays all AFC teams, NFC team plays all NFC teams. Top eight from each conference play in the playoffs. No first round bye. Give them all a bye week 17.

I think it's dumb. It's more exciting with the current way because it's more exclusive and divisional winners actually mean something.

I don't see what the point is of taking the top four teams, who have byes in the current system, and making them play an extra game against a mediocre team. Why punish the top teams in each conference by making them play another game in order to get to the super bowl, extending their season by a week, giving people the chance to get injured before the games between teams that really deserve to be there... makes no sense.

A 14 win team playing a home game against an 8 or 9 win team and beating them doesn't prove anything. It doesn't add anything, except a chance that a key player will be injured in a meaningless tune-up game.

And, I suppose, ticket sales and concession sales and parking fees and TV fees... which are all that matter to Goodell, not the game.

Meh. 14 out of 32 teams is just about the same as 12 out of 28 teams, like it was from 1990-1994.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the system as it is today. Finishing 1 and 2 have a substantial reward. The cut-off is tuned right about where it needs to be for contenders vs pretenders. It's fine.

All I would do would be to eliminate a preseason game.
