Job Advice On Postion Offered

So I applied for an open position with a company. As part of the application I gave my minimum accepted salary. When I received a phone call from them to set up an interview I asked what range they were looking to pay. Their answer: "I haven't looked yet but we are within range of what you put down for your minimum or we wouldn't have called"

Okay, fair enough. So I go to the interview. At the end of the interview I ask the HR person, "what range are you looking to pay?". I get the same answer of we have to pull numbers and this and that but what you are asking for is within our range. Again, fair enough.

Today I get an offer 10% below what I stated as my minimum accepted and told that is the highest they can go because the position is that and not that.

So I'm kinda like, WTF happened to "within range"? I asked twice on two separate occasions what they were looking to pay and both times I was lead to believe what I stated as a minimum was close to an acceptable level. I understand coming in initially below my stated minimum but this sounds kinda shitty, really.

Worth negotiating? I do want the position but I am not hurting nor in desperate need for it either.

If you really want to get ahead in an I.T. career, you have to leave and pursue other oppertunitys. HR is slow to promote and take small risks on good employees. See Guru's recent experience for a prime example.

I respectfully disagree with this. Yes, money is a motivating factor for everyone that's not lucky enough to be independently wealthy, but it's definitely not the only factor. I enjoy the work that I do and working with my teammates.

Will I maximize my earnings by moving around? Absolutely. But is "getting ahead" solely based on how much money you make? I specifically ask you this since you, in particular, always tend to bring up how much money you make.

My job pays me a very fair wage. I get to set my hours, have a stable level of job security, determine my own workload for the most part, work from home regularly and am always encouraged to learn new skills for my specific role. I also only have to drive roughly 5 miles to get there. If you took a couple of these non-tangible benefits away but paid me 10k more, I really don't know if I'd take it.

You also seemed like you asked so often about pay and when I interview people, that turns me off the most.

You should know the market, the skills you possess, and the pay you deserve. If you can't do that, you need to work on those three things and go in with confidence and sell yourself.
#1 The application required you submit your minimum.
#2 I asked for the pay range when they called and asked if I was still interested in the position and then asked for the pay range at the end of the 1st interview.

Sounds like your workplace is hitting on all cylinders for intrinsic motivation: autonomy, collaboration, and mastery.

I think so. It took me a few years to get it really, but the great culture that I work in offsets my need to feel like i'm killing it financially.

Wait a minute....the very fact that you posted this thread means that you're no less guilty of gaming this discussion than they are.

"What's your minimum acceptable salary"
"$100K"
"Well we can offer you $90K"
"Well 100K may not have been my minimum minimum....let me thing about it"

Dafuq? They asked you for your minimum - you gave them a number that clearly wasn't your minimum or else you wouldn't even bother with the offer, you'd have just walked away.

Of course they offered less than you sought because people always do exactly what you did. It's very rare that someone's minimum is actually a hard minimum. They offered you an amount they deemed acceptable in light of your qualifications and performance in interviews. If you don't think it's fair, counter. If you don't get a number you want, walk away.

But this juvenile temper tantrum bullshit as though you weren't trying to do the exact same thing they were trying to do is just weak as hell.

Ha!

Yeah...it's totally unreasonable for businesses to offer less than 'minimum' with attitudes like this one floating around. Thankya much for proving my point.

I would always write in negotiable on my minimum. There are a lot of things that can change that number.

My old job let me work four 10 hour days instead of five 8hr. I wound up working less hours being salary because at 8hrs I'd always wind up staying later most days. Going to the 10 hour days most people would be gone by the time I left so I didn't wind up staying late to help someone.

Also if the company doesn't offer a 401k match or some sort of a discount stock purchase program that would be a reduction in benefits for me so they'd have to make that up somewhere.

If their vacation policy is strictly based on years of service that would also be something I would want to negotiate. A lot of people put too much on that salary number and don't consider the other factors.

Any advice on how to make money on the side? I'm sick of my job and the bullshit that comes along with it.
