The fact that airlines like Frontier and Spirit can hang around (and make big profits) is proof that air travel is seen by many as a commodity these days. You may not like United, but if they're the cheapest option, most will still take it.

Webster's definition:

Definition of beating
1: an act of striking with repeated blows so as to injure or damage; also : the injury or damage thus inflicted

Hey, I'm not defending their actions one bit. It was despicable. What it wasn't though was a beating.

And yes, he certainly sustained a broken nose and broken teeth (per news reports). But those came from being forcibly removed from his seat. Not from a beating, or getting his ass beat, or getting the **** beat out of him. etc.

All those terms imply multiple blows being rained down on him and you know it. Hence my claim that you are being obtuse.

Exactly. UA will have to grovel for a while, and spend several million burying this deal with Dr Dao. But, let's get real. This isn't going to put them penalty box like so many on here think. There are 4 major airlines and several fringe players. They aren't going anywhere, and they will be back to ****ing their passengers as soon as possible

What are your thoughts on 'ought not' versus 'ought not to'?

One of my co-workers is currently in an argument with her professor regarding her use of the phrase in a paper.

She claims that 'ought not' is correct. Her professor says she needed to add the 'to' to the end of the phrase.

I agree with the professor, but am not interested in looking it up.

Any insight? I'll pass on your thoughts to mentioned coworker.

I actually agree with you. That was just an over exaggerated, cliché CP response I got when expressing the same concerns. The backtracking started when ol boy wasn't arrested for sneaking back onto a flight he was already physically removed from, but no one seems to care about those details because "ass beat" and industry we no likey.

If grammatical correctness is a concern, I try to avoid such colloquialism altogether.

Your friend - 'Jim seemed nice, but turned out to be a criminal.'
Workaround - 'Jim seemed nice, until we discovered his criminal past.'

"David Dao, 69, suffered a concussion, broken nose and damaged sinuses and lost two front teeth when he was dragged off a flight Sunday to make room for United personnel, lawyer Thomas Demetrio said."

Those arms rests can be a be brutal evidently.

Jesus. If that happened to him in a bar, there would be a guy (or three) sitting in a jail right now.

Or on the street by police and then it's should've followed orders but airlines and such that we can all relate to and then it's an unacceptable ass beating.
