How can we improve Chiefs discussion around here?

I've mentioned my disappointment in the quality of discussion in a few threads lately, but figured it's worth a more meta discussion to figure out 1) if I'm alone in this perception and 2) if there's anything that can be done about it.

Back in the old days, I walked 20 miles to school in the snow uphill both ways!

Err...wait. I mean, ChiefsPlanet was THE place where I got my Chiefs news. If an article was worth reading on another site, it was linked here. If there was a tweet with Chiefs news, it was posted here 30 seconds after it hit Twitter. If someone said something worthwhile on the radio, someone would post about it on here. And (with all due respect to those who like megathreads), you could glance at the front page and have a pretty decent idea of what the big news was for the day.

After returning home from the boonies on Sunday morning, however, I honestly had no idea how the game Saturday even went. I ended up visiting Arrowhead Pride and Chiefs Digest just to get a feel for what went down. Am I the weird one for thinking that that sucks?

Anyway, just figured it's worth the discussion. If it turns out that everyone is pretty content the way things are, I'll just bookmark some other resources and move on with life. But if I'm not alone, what can we do to make things better?

What about using Rep? Can rep be tied to individual threads? Meaning, if someone is destroying a thread and the majority of those active in the thread agree, that person can be "repped" out of that individual thread. Takes the onus off the mods, and is a majority rules kind of a thing. And isn't a perma ban for the user for the entire site - would just be a ban from the thread for "x" amount of hours or days or whatever.

Also, if the Rep was real time, the problematic poster could see when he/she was getting close to being booted from the thread and choose to dial it back a bit - or not and suffer the consequences.

Don't know if that's possible to work rep that way....

Meh...on the star board there were trolls that posted nothing but a thread with a period, hundreds of times, supressing the real threads. Crap like that was not uncommon. We had our share of Johnny One-Note's who posted about nothing about how Carl Peterson sucked, etc. This is nothing new, I think those who disagree need to find better ways of dealing with them or ignoring them.

I actually dont think it's as bad now as it was 15+ years ago.

Sorry, Bearcat, but I completely disagree that it's not a slippery slope. The hoard with torches simply hate Clay. They always have, and they'll never stop hating him even if he made a permanent change. There's nothing you can do about that. And if you DO decide to tredge down that path, you better make universal rules against all trolls.

That includes ****ing Knowmo.
Well, I said "I don't want to scream slippery slope," while giving several reasons why it actually is one... I see sites that are squeaky clean/heavily moderated and sites that are free for alls... and that's because you're either not going to give anyone an inch or you have to give them a mile. No matter where the line is drawn, some people will run right up to it, walk it, tip toe over it, and have to be shoved back before they get it.

I'm thinking of it as a small extension of what we already do, "take out the trash" or whatever you want to call it.... the most obvious trolling/hijacking. And yeah, that could still cause a bunch of "well, what about...." and complaining. We already get ridiculous reported posts now.

The people who were there with some basic social skills and the respect you'd have if you were all sitting in a bar together were fine. It's not a basic human right to post here.

It's obvious the site is in decline right now, both in quality and in traffic. If common sense action isn't taken then the trolls will PSP this place. People seem to be fine with it I guess.
That's all fine, but it's also a culture thing... people know they can post a certain way here because it's been that way since day one, and while I'm not worried about frustrating trolls, it's also not my board, so a change to that extent would have to come from AC, not any of us mods.

Infractions would be a good way to do it, but just like rep, it would get abused... everyone's line is different. It's hard enough coming to agreements sometimes between the mods, much less people dealing with what the board at large thinks of them.

And we already get feuds between people and have to babysit, stuff like that would actually require us to babysit more in the end.

I was thinking that using rep would prevent the mods having to babysit, and give the majority a tool to control THEIR forum. Clearly it would have to work that no one poster could abuse it - would have to be a majority. And I do like the idea of giving the "minority" the option to dial it back before being removed from a thread.

Like I said though, I don't know exactly how rep works or if it could be changed to work in the way I suggested.

Rep is a pretty simple gimmick, so it would take someone recoding it to do that... but, even so, think of the number of people who hate Clay or college football/basketball threads, etc. We have dumb rep wars now and it's not even worth anything... it would be a cluster****.

Lots of great posters have gone AWOL...OTWP is a huge fan, and he bailed. So did Direckshun.
It's just not as fun anymore...the community feel that built this place is almost nonexistent. Nzoner's bashes brought tons of people together...those are done. Dart's B5 tailgates? People like you, Mohillbilly, Morphius, KCMizzou, etc hardly post anymore.

The luster has dulled. Can't help but feel my days are numbered too.
