Let's talk defense

Where does everyone think this defense will rank at the end of the season?

Will we have more success stopping the run?

Will the secondary be lit up like a Christmas tree on a regular basis without Peters?

Let's discuss it all in here.

The defense had 3 bad games last year: Raiders, Cowboys and Jets. (Don’t care about DeShaun Watson scoring 14 garbage points when the game was clearly over).

This team had Zombo, Gaines, Acker, Sorenson, Parker and the corpse of DJ and Tamba and they were still 15th in points allowed.

The middle of the field is going to be so much better this year with Hitchens, DOD and Ragland with a year under his belt. That’s not even with Berry returning, whose leadership alone is a massive boost.

We also aren’t completely ****ed if an OLB gets hurt bc we won’t be relying on Zombo as the next man up. Houston, Ford in a contract year, Speaks and Tanoh year 2 is way better than what he had on the depth chart last season.

I think this defense will surprise people. No they won’t be a top unit, but they’ll be better than they were pegged to be.

I agree. I feel like this defense is broadly underrated going into next year, not only by national media ans fans but also the Chiefs fans.

If Marcus Peters was still on this team or if Veach can get another good CB, I think the defense could be a top 10 defense.

The Chargers defense is highly regarded going into next year but when I compare it to the Chiefs', I don't think it is that much better. Their secondary is clearly better but I like our front 7 over theirs.

And we easily win the Raiders and Jets games if we had Berry. We also probably get past the "vaunted" Titans as well.

I think the bar is reasonably low for this defense to be a step up.

Bob Sutton still hasn't shown me he is worth a shit.
I think the defense will rank in the 20-26 range.

Seriously.

Sutton's scoring defenses have only ranked 5th, 2nd, 3rd, and 7th prior to last year. 2014 and 2015 were top 5 defenses. Sutton can't make chicken salad out of chicken caca. The NFL is all about talent. Coaching separates the great teams from the good teams but it can't make BAD units into good ones. This defense was terrible last year, front to back. That's not on Sutton, that's on John Dorsey. If Veach is worth is salt at all, people will suddenly realize that Sutton has nothing do with it.

Steelers get shut down again and have a fluke TD on Gaines. Only gave up 19 points.
12 to NYG, 16 to the Bills.

The defense did their part in almost every game. Even the playoff game they only gave up 22 points.

That’s more than enough for this team to win. They aren’t giving up 30 a game like the Vermeil defenses.

I know this for certain: if I see Justin Houston drop back to cover a pass again, I'm going to punch the next old man that I see.

This man gets it. I also don't expect to see much Ford this year unless the coaches see something that's been missing the last few years. Speaks can rush from both sides, so I'd expect to see Houston/kpass/speaks on the edges most frequently.

Statistically, I don't think he dropped any more than he did the past few seasons. you just noticed it more because the opposite side, which gets the 1v1 when Houston is on the field, couldn't do anything.

We are going to rotate the shit out of everyone dude. Sounds like the plan is for the offense to get a lead and the defense to pin their ears back and rush.

Yeah, I think this is definitely the thought process. Especially given the versatility of our OLBs and DEs.

The secondary won't be that weak if we have a solid pass rush. If we have the same pass rush that we've had lately, well.....let's not think about it
