The best fried chicken?
I am talking about national eateries, like if you drive for miles and have an urge to eat some fried chicken, which one place do you choose?
Aside from that, what is the best fried chicken you ever had, homemade or in restaurant? By the way, all fried chicken lovers rejoice for this news!!! The only beef I have about fried food, (actually is from my wife) is that the shortening that is used. Some stores only change the shortening once a week. |

Yes, and it's not even a contest. Honorable mention to Willie Mae's Scotch House in New Orleans though. Their sides are better than Gus's.

The best I've ever had, bar none, is from a little ol' lady in Baton Rouge, LA. She previously owned a couple restaurants near LSU, but a few years ago packed up and now cooks by appointment only out of her home. Her name is simply "Mama."
My first trip there, three other guys and I were on a fold-out card table in her front room. She served fried chicken, mustard greens, red beans and rice, gumbo, mashed potatoes/gravy, corn bread, and bread pudding, and it was one of the greatest overall meals I've ever had, but that chicken - nothing even comes close to it. I was there with some colleagues, and when the Baton Rouge guy made the reservation, he was sure to tell her that we needed "a real receipt, Mama." When he hung up the phone, he said, "I usually pay Mama with cognac." |
