No Tag for Landon Collins?

Dave Gettleman casts doubt on tagging Landon Collins

Safety Landon Collins‘ future with the Giants was a topic of conversation last week amid dueling reports about whether he cleaned out his locker.

Collins cleared up the locker issue by saying he took stuff he needed and left some other things behind, but the issue of his return remained up in the air and it was the subject of one of the questions posed to General Manager Dave Gettleman at his Scouting Combine press conference in Wednesday. Gettleman’s answer suggested that the team may not be going that route.

The Giants are projected to have in the neighborhood of $27 million in cap space, but Gettleman said that’s not all available money because “you’ve got to go into the season with $8-10 million in space” in order to deal with any injury losses.

“So you’ve got to say to yourself: ‘$10 million goes here,'” Gettleman said, via SNY.TV. “So now that conversation is different, isn’t it? ‘Man, they’ve only got $17 million left.'”

Gettleman, who was the Panthers G.M. when the team rescinded Josh Norman‘s tag, also pointed to the unhappiness that often comes with a tag.

“So let’s go to the conversation of eliminating distractions,” Gettleman said, via SNY.tv. “You tag a guy. He’s mad. And that’s all you guys are going to write about. For six months it’s what it’s going to be. So I have to say to myself, ‘Is it worth it?'”

A report last week indicated that Collins would sit out the offseason if tagged before the March 5 deadline for teams to avail themselves of that option.

Yeah. He's fine at it.

I just can't get excited about spending a lot of money at safety again when there's just so many options in FA and the draft.

He’s a 25 year old all pro. The top 7 teams in cap space have 700 million dollars or something like that

How much do you think he’s gonna get?

hes one of the best Safeties in the NFL. He’s in his prime. He’s not a disaster in coverage, just average. He is a known talent. We need a box safety to help with the run, cover TE’s etc. we need to get a great corner in the draft to cover WR’s. Need the other Safety to be good in coverage.

I'd be satisfied if we went out and got Collins. Dude was almost DMVP and wasn't that under Spagnuolo's defense?

My guess—because he isn’t an elite cover guy like Berry and Thomas when they got paid—is probably in the ballpark of $9-11M per year.

And trust me, I would never advocate for paying him like Berry. The only reason I’d be cool with signing him for a decent chunk of money at all is because it seems that he fits Spagnuolo’s scheme like a glove at the SS position.

With an extremely heavy safety market this year and the Giants cap situation I didn't think they were going to tag Collins. I'm hopeful and I'd be surprised if EB plays a full season anywhere. Chiefs should thank their lucky stars that EB doesn't need surgery so he can pass a physical and get out of the contract.

Those guys are perfectly complementary, IMO. Adderley as a single-high sort of safety with Collins being able to concentrate on short/box responsibilities would just be absolutely killer.

I would be all over that possibility. They'd do a lot to be able to cover for some coverage issues, especially if those coverage issues are mental rather than phsyical. So if you end up with Joejuan Williams or Julian Love biting on a double move, you still have some help behind them.

A 'starting 5' of Collins, Adderley, Fuller, Ward and Love would be able to do some pretty spectacular work. Man if you could somehow add D'Andre Walker as the Sam to give you a basic box look of Walker, Hitchens, DoD, Speaks, Nnadi, Jones and Ford - you've put a lot of complementary tools on the board there. A lot of places where one guys speed can cover another guys strength and vice versa.

That's the beginnings of a damn sound defense with a fair amount of youth and upside mixed in.
Love? You’re talking about #27 on Notre Dame? Nah the Chiefs should pass on him. #27 is bad luck for the Chiefs. The guy just might end up being caught in a domestic violence dispute with some chick after all. Nah they should pass.

I'm curious why the Giants would let him walk for nothing? Is he just not a fit there?

Probably don't want to pay him. They've got to protect OBJ and Manning.
