ChiefsPlanet How can we improve Chiefs discussion around here? - Page 21

I've mentioned my disappointment in the quality of discussion in a few threads lately, but figured it's worth a more meta discussion to figure out 1) if I'm alone in this perception and 2) if there's anything that can be done about it.

Back in the old days, I walked 20 miles to school in the snow uphill both ways!

Err...wait. I mean, ChiefsPlanet was THE place where I got my Chiefs news. If an article was worth reading on another site, it was linked here. If there was a tweet with Chiefs news, it was posted here 30 seconds after it hit Twitter. If someone said something worthwhile on the radio, someone would post about it on here. And (with all due respect to those who like megathreads), you could glance at the front page and have a pretty decent idea of what the big news was for the day.

After returning home from the boonies on Sunday morning, however, I honestly had no idea how the game Saturday even went. I ended up visiting Arrowhead Pride and Chiefs Digest just to get a feel for what went down. Am I the weird one for thinking that that sucks?

Anyway, just figured it's worth the discussion. If it turns out that everyone is pretty content the way things are, I'll just bookmark some other resources and move on with life. But if I'm not alone, what can we do to make things better?

I followed the game thread for awhile. Couldn't do it anymore. Shut the computer down and went out to my shop and watched the game. Had more beer out there in the fridge anyway.

When I had admin access to the server I saw a lot of search bots on all the time. Sometimes hundreds at the same time.

Yeah, I hear you, and that's always been a challenge. I certainly don't blame AC for staying away from mod stuff for the most part, but it's hard to do anything but maintain the status quo unless there's someone to really step in and lay down the line.

My general takeaway from this thread is that it's largely about generating enough topics to get some momentum toward reasonable discussion. Hopefully that will happen somewhat naturally as we get closer to the regular season, but until then, I mostly just hope that people will stop letting the "haters" (OK, now I really DO feel old) get in the way. If you think a topic might be interesting, post it. And tell anyone who is an asshole about it to shut up and start trying to make this a good place to hang out again.

The "active users" stat in the AdminCP is pretty reliable - it logs the number of people who actually log in to the Planet in a given day.

The "guests" part is pretty iffy. Lots of them are just search spiders and the like, though I have clue why it would have suddenly jumped up so far on a random day in March.

I suppose that part of the problem may be guys like me who only visit CP a few times a year and don't contribute much to the site aside from a couple of thoughtful posts. However, what I have always appreciated about CP is the fact that no matter how long it's been between visits I can come back and pick up where I left off without being deactivated due to inactivity, and that most here are decent people. I've learned to simply not engage those I have a personality conflict with.

I'd definitely get rid of a few around here, except I'm sure some would be 'harmless' for some or the majority of the board, while someone like Clay doesn't bother me much.

It's a nice theory, but there's a reason there's a huge gap between this place and other boards.... anything in between would be a huge pain in the ass to moderate. That doesn't mean we couldn't clean up a little, but you'd laugh at half the reported posts we see, because everyone's line is different and no one will ever be happy where it's drawn.

Now there's a good point. You should see some of the stuff that gets reported. I mean seriously some of the reports are WTF? Everyone is built a little differently and what offends one guy another guy will laugh at.

We have some guys that report several posts a day for any given user just because they don't like them, not because they did anything particularly offensive. When a guy pulling that we just put them on "Unable to report Posts."

Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of legitimate reasons to report a post and I certainly don't want to discourage people from doing so, but there are also a lot things reported that shouldn't be.

I almost reported this to be a wise ass. I thought better when I came to my senses and realized that you could change my username to something along the lines of lil dumpy.
