Yes, but be aware of your surroundings. In the Quarter in particular just stay on the beaten path and you'll be fine. At night, stay away from the Armstrong Park side. When in doubt, take a cab. Not trying to scare you, I just read the Times Picayune daily and it's been a bit worse than normal lately. FWIW, I walked all over at night without a problem but know the town like the back of my hand.

Go during the winter. I was there auditing a store in October and it was still hot and muggy. But I'm from Western Kansas where there is no humidity. It ****ing melts my ass like a Hershey bar in a hot car.
We saw some plantation, hell if I know the name, but it was pretty awesome. Don't go to Bourbon Street if you aren't in the night scene. There isn't anything there for you. I had a shitty ass time because we did all the wrong things. |

Maple Leaf Bar and Jacque Imos are great suggestions. Also, Commander's Palace, Drago's, Mother's (for breakfast), and Cochon Butcher (amazing). As far as stuff to do: plantation house tours, fishing on Ponchartrain, WW2 museum, aquarium, stumbling around the French Quarter drunk, etc. etc. NOLA is a fantastic place to visit.

Also, the French Quarter smells like a dirty nutsack mixed with ebola ass during the heat of the summer.

Don't be afraid of gas station food. There is better food in gas stations in Louisiana than in most towns altogether.
If you have a car, take a drive up to Baton Rouge. It's only an hour, hour and a half away. Capital city, some of the best gumbo and jambalaya around. And their specialty is boudin balls. Best. ****ing. Thing. Ever. |
