How can we improve Chiefs discussion around here?

I've mentioned my disappointment in the quality of discussion in a few threads lately, but figured it's worth a more meta discussion to figure out 1) if I'm alone in this perception and 2) if there's anything that can be done about it.

Back in the old days, I walked 20 miles to school in the snow uphill both ways!

Err...wait. I mean, ChiefsPlanet was THE place where I got my Chiefs news. If an article was worth reading on another site, it was linked here. If there was a tweet with Chiefs news, it was posted here 30 seconds after it hit Twitter. If someone said something worthwhile on the radio, someone would post about it on here. And (with all due respect to those who like megathreads), you could glance at the front page and have a pretty decent idea of what the big news was for the day.

After returning home from the boonies on Sunday morning, however, I honestly had no idea how the game Saturday even went. I ended up visiting Arrowhead Pride and Chiefs Digest just to get a feel for what went down. Am I the weird one for thinking that that sucks?

Anyway, just figured it's worth the discussion. If it turns out that everyone is pretty content the way things are, I'll just bookmark some other resources and move on with life. But if I'm not alone, what can we do to make things better?

Yeah, I've taken breaks from here for over a decade because of the stupidity and lack of content... I think the one thing that's changed in the past few years is there are more people mocking the stupidity, especially in game threads. You can only react to one play or one quarter or one win/loss so many ways, and you can only facepalm at the dumber reactions so many times.

These discussions have been taking place as long as there have been "the good old days," and I think the major factor is that anyone from 2000 or 2005 is now 10-15 years older. I got into all the bullshit back then, thought I could change people's mind on stuff.... not so much anymore, so of course it's more annoying. Guess what, people also get tired of facebook, twitter, etc; for some reason.

Like the idea of not necessarily getting rid of megathreads, but at least moving some news/discussion to their own threads.

That said, I've always been willing to come down harder on some of the shit stains around here, but that's something for AC to decide, not me.

That's kind of what I'm trying to figure out. Am I just old and lame, or is this reaching the point that it's having a significant impact on the site's value?

Back when I actually had a say in it, I was definitely pretty hands-off. But now that I can bitch without having to figure out how to do anything about it, I can see the merit in trying to at least cut down on the constant hijacking of every thread.

It's like the tech guys don't want to give some people the opportunity to make them look bad. Due to the fact some people will do almost anything to come here to take their shits, which makes it tough to keep them out.

I'm more curious of how people like Clay and SDH can be banned from CP, and then allowed to post again under another identity. Do I have that bit of history right? What's that about?

Anyway, CP is good, if in the mood for a laugh. If I am feeling serious or already irritated, I avoid it and go to another site for my Chiefs fix.. and even that place has a few that are making people miserable just as Clay and SDH try to do. I really feel like CP would be better off without them, but hey, it's whatever.

Yeah, for a long time I've said the former (about me, not you... or maybe you ), but some of the game threads last year seemed to be above and beyond the normal level of stupidity. But, I don't really ever remember game threads being all that great... just a lot of reactionary bullshit, and hopefully with a few people who can bring humor and/or intelligence to all of it. Comparing it to the Royals threads I've been in lately, it's like in previous years we had 1 pete an 1 PB, and now we have one pete, 1 PB, and 5 guys mocking them.

I wouldn't mind cleaning up a little, and to Sauto's post I don't think it's so much wanting to look bad than running the company line of "it's not my board." We've had the same culture for 15 years and to start banning people would mean changing how the site's been run for all those years. Not to overstate "taking out the trash," but we've had people trolling this site for years and years and if anything AC has told us to calm down on bans in the past.... so, any discussion on where we'd draw the new line wouldn't come from us.

Bad server performance could have an impact, but I'd say the downward trend is more due to message boards becoming a dinosaur.

Younger fans will just post on fb or twitter and basically this board is dumb and gay to them.

Many of years past have had one or two primary subject lines that has driven post traffic.

The only real difference is the 'mega' threads. I do think that's having an impact.

Titus beat me to it. Waxing rhapsodic about the early 2000's is a bit Pollyanna. There were constant bitch threads about the QB situation. And Carl. And Marty. And Greg Hill. And later, Rufus Dawes.

The only difference was they weren't in mega threads. The only thing that's changed is the names.

And in those days the the politics threads were on the main board.

I've always been against a heavy hand. But, if all your doing as a poster is going into a thread to bitch about your point, hijack a thread that has nothing to do with your point.....then maybe its time to revisit the hands off approach when it comes to annoying everyone else with your same viewpoint in every thread?
