13.5 years in my house and...

...I made my first fall down the stairs tonight.

I don't even know what happened. One second I was fine, and the next I was down. I was barefoot and I think I accidentally stepped on my pant leg and it slipped forward off the step.

My right elbow and left pinkie took minor hits, and my left big toe took a moderate hit, but the big damage was to my left pinkie toe. I have no idea what it hit.

Nothing broken, but my pinkie toe isn't happy right now.

I even managed to make a right turn at the landing and keep falling.

So, did you trip over your dog or was it the sofa...

Those are the 2 biggest culprits, typically in the Denver area.

From the picture it appears you have a large rat in your basement. You should set some traps.

Same here. Put 'em on first thing in the morning, don't take 'em off until bed.

I've read that a really high percentage of accidents happen in the home, something like 100%, or maybe higher. I wouldn't stay in my home at all if I didn't live here.

I could win money if filmed while walking through the house when the lights are off. I curl my toes! It is a habit I got when I walked by my end table one time and caught my little toe. Bending it back in place left a lasting limp and a even longer fear of doing it again. I guess it would be rather difficult to film in the dark so much for the making money part of the story.

Don't you have a window at that landing? I remember someone posting at a pic of it, saying you'd better not fall down the stairs, you'd go right out.

I guess it was a bad day for walking. I was on the road all week and got home Saturday at about 4 Pm. I cut a deal with my son to grab the shovel and go on "yard biscuit patrol." While he did that, I ran over to Lowes and scored 6 bags of regular fertilizer, 1 bag of grass seed, 1 bag of starter fertilizer and a new fertilizer spreader.

I'm now ready to roll and beat the rain and snow that is forecast to show up Sudnay afternoon. I figured I would let Mother Nature work it in to the ground for me and provide me with thick lush grass for me later in the spring. (My daughter has to make a living too.)

I was hauling all the bags of fertilzer into the backyard to begin the project, when all hell broke loose. I have a raised back porch near the back door that I have to step on and over to get the the backyard. I had 4 bags of fertilzer in my arms so I couldn't see the ground all that well. I went to take my last step before stepping onto the raised porch and and WHAM! I was on the ground in a great deal of pain. It would seem one of the dogs had carried a "kong" (a large rubber dog toy) over by the proch which I missed, and dropped it there.

Long story short, my right ankle ballooned up to the point where it looked like I had a golf ball sticking out on the right side and a large marble sticking out on the left side. I hopped around with the fertilzer spreader long enough to finish the job (about a half hour) and had my wife take me down to the ER. After a few x-rays, it was determined that it was not broken, only tore up as far as they could ascertain, but an orthopedic surgeon still has to view the x-ray Monday to find out for sure.

Today, I am moving a bit slow on crutches, one of the dogs is on probation and the Kong is at least three to four houses away, depending on where it landed after I managed to get to my feet after the incident.

Fortunately, that's the next staircase down. At some point when I'm old and feeble, I'm sure I'm going to go through that window.

Bummer. Ankles are tough, though, because sprains can sometimes be worse than breaks. I still limp the first 15 feet out of bed in the morning as a result of ankle sprains over the years.

My pinkie toe has a bruise curling from nail downward, on the inside for some reason, but I'm not really even limping or anything. Other than a little minor throbbing, I won't go on the injury report.

Toes can be a son of a gun. The only thing I have ever broken (unless this thing of mine turns out to be a break) is toes. After several years in martial arts, I had at least five toe breaks. On that note, I hope yours mends back into one piece soon for you.
