Either he takes a pay cut or he's gone.

I believe one probably has to go, but no way in hell am I letting one walk. Houston can be traded, Ford should be tagged at least this year, then tagged and traded next year at minimum.

Have to consider that those pass rushing numbers are inflated by mahomie giving us leads to work with and other teams abandoning the run

They can’t realistically keep both Houston and Ford.
Personally, I’d prefer to keep Houston for several reasons already mentioned, but mostly due to the fact that Ford is more of an injury risk. That said, I think they will try to tag and trade Ford. The risk there is if they don’t get at least a 3rd for him. If not, they’re almost forced to keep Ford and release Houston. If the my keep Houston, I’d prefer they not restructure Houston and kick that can down the road. Draft a DE to replace whichever one they keep. Give the draftee 1 year to work into the starting role if not sooner.

It's really going to suck when he goes somewhere else for 11m per year and puts up 15-20 sacks as a full-time DE and is 2nd team All-Pro. We are pretty much screwed unless Houston agrees to a Team-Friendly restructuring. I don't know that we can afford to keep paying him 20-22m even though he's started being productive again.

I want to re-sign him. If he gets Ryan Kerrigan or clay Matthews money that puts him at $8m per year. That's not bad for what value we'd expect from him in his next contract.

It'd be nice to keep him but he's going to have to be willing to take a paycut to like half of what he makes now including a base for this next year being low so the Chiefs can stack this D.
If he says no then you move on. |
