Tell me about Hulu and Cord cutting.

Wife and I are pretty much done with Direct TV. We don't watch much TV anymore but still want to have the ability to when we have time, just not at DTV's price tag.

1. What I am seeing is $40/month gets you a decent amount of channels. I see add-ons can make it more but that’s the basic cost for TV channels? Does this price ever go up?
2. I will have access to all the live sports I need with this package? For $40 their sports channel package looks pretty impressive to me. Actually has channels I don’t get now.
3. How quickly do you blow through internet data (yes our internet provider options both track data use).
4. How fast of internet speeds do I really need?
5. We have 4 TVs. One has built in Roku, one has a Fire Stick. What would you recommend doing for the other 2 TVs…fire stick, roku, chromecast?

What else should I know about this? Would you recommend a different setup from Hulu all together?

Preseason Chiefs games are not available with Youtube TV, because the Chiefs do their own production for preseason. It's a Chiefs broadcasting rights issue, not a Youtube TV issue. The regular season games will all be available with Youtube TV.

I know with DirecTV Now DVR it has the same issue.

I will set a program to record... and it will not show up on my Item List while it is recording (or even the next day).

But if I use the search feature and search out the program, I can find it and play it back even when it's in the process of Airing.

I don't really have any experience with Hulu. Never went back after they quit doing the free version. I've got experience with SlingTV and YoutubeTV though, if you have any questions about alternatives.

Any way to trick YTTV (or any other service) into thinking I'm in KC so I can get the local broadcast?

I'm listening Boo. I have no experience with either.

Why did you choose that route?

Absolutely. Depends on what platform you're talking about though.

The only reason I pay anything is for sports. I tried SlingTV for about a year, then signed up for YoutubeTV to compare. SlingTV was OK, I had to add the orange and blue package together plus DVR to really make it work. Then I tried YoutubeTV back in it's trial period in KC. I liked 1oo% of what YoutubeTV provided. At the time, it was cheaper than the same lineup I wanted with SlingTV, plus a much better interface, access from every single one of my devices, ability to share with friends/family, etc. It provided all the local stuff, and every single sport I'm interested in with the ability to record all of it. You tell YoutubeTV to record the Chiefs team, and it will record all games automatically. I like syfy and documentaries and it has that too. You can even DVR movies that are on TV, and slowly build up a movie database in your library. It helps that I'm grandfathered in to the intro price of $35 a month as well.

That said, I've never compared HuluTV's live stuff. So I don't have any way of saying which is better. I haven't touched Hulu in like a decade.

So, if you're open to taking a look at some of the other streaming services I have some experience with them all.

Sling TV: used it for about a month but this was well over a year ago and I still was in my Directv contract at the time, just curious about streaming options at that point. I came away entirely unimpressed with the service. Live only at the time, no DVR option and the channel selection was meh at best.

Roku TV: used it off and on for about a week or whatever the trial period is while I was juggling between DTV Now and Youtube TV. The interface was nice and easy to use. Channel selection was perfectly fine with plenty of woman type options for my wife and enough sports channels. Believe it was right around $40/month. Didn't really use the DVR on it at all, but the channel selection and interface are what I really was checking on it for. Didn't seem buggy or shitty based on my usage. Worked with my firestick and roku tv and chromecast.

Directv Now: I got this for free for 3 months after I cancelled my satellite service with them. I used it daily for 3 months and cancelled it at the end to go back to Youtube TV.

The Good: the channel selection is pretty nice and balanced. As far as kids channels and movie channels go this one is the most family friendly and has enough sports channels to satisfy your needs. Nickelodeon was the big sticking point for my wife because my two year old is obsessed with Paw Patrol. DTV has it, nobody else does. It was free, so that was great for me and why I had it for so long. Right before I left they added NFLN on if you go to their $50/month tier. Now it's $40/month for the Live a Little package I had. MLB Network was also in there IIRC. Works for Firestick, roku tv, chromecast, but not my XBox One.

The Bad: What a buggy piece of shit this thing is. It freezes constantly and doesn't record properly. DVR space is small. It went down the entire night the Home Run Derby was happening so I didn't get to watch that. Didn't have local FSKC, so I couldn't watch the Royals (lol, this wasn't that big of a deal this year). Just unreliable in terms of freezing, updating and being a functional TV service. This is why I left their service. If it went out on the first weekend football started I would have rage killed something. And, **** DTV since ATT bought them. The company has just progressively gotten worse every month.

Youtube TV: Bought it for a month and had DTVNow at the same time, then cancelled at my wife's request and rode out two more free months with DTVNow. This is the one, my friends. Now it does lack in family friendly shit, woman and kids channels. Nickelodeon specifically, but they all have Disney channels on them. It has all of the sports channels I really want. Missing NFLN, but it has like 15 sports channels. My local FSKC included so I can tell myself I'll watch the Royals now. I'm confident when college football and basketball season are in full swing I'll be able to watch nearly any game I'd ever want to. Loaded with some good movie channels and enough of the other regular ones everyone should be happy. Interface is awesome. DVR is kickass. The only complaints I have on this is that it doesn't work with my Firestick without doing some extra work, but it does work with my XBox One so I've got all my bases covered for the TV's we use. Price is $40/month.

If this is available in your market, I'd definitely give it a trial run. I think you get two weeks free and you can have up to 6 logins at the same time on it so you can have your wife try it on a different device while you watch what you want and figure out if it works for her too.

Doesn't sound bad at all. Roku and probably could stream on kindle or ipad?

I am giving youtubetv a test drive and it works well.

I watched a football game and there was a slight quality difference in motion and picture with Dishnetwork having the advantage. Nothing I can’t live with though.
