https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/nati...484598181.html
Fashion icon Kate Spade has been found dead of an apparent suicide in her Manhattan home, law enforcement sources tell News 4. She was 55 years old. A staff member found Spade hanged from a red scarf on a bedroom door at her Park Avenue residence Tuesday morning, a senior law enforcement official and other law enforcement sources say. |

Had lunch at a hospital today. Guy my age, 30-40ish, ate next to me. His arm was disfigured and he really struggled to coordinate the fork holding his food as he ate. And it was cool to watch. He's a person worth of respect and admiration for fighting thru.
I immediately thought of the opposite: human vermin like Spade + bourdain. Gutless quitters. They're lower than dirt and worthy of nothing but our scorn and derision. Not tributes. |

I was. My wife, too. I can absolutely see how someone looks at suicide as a cowardice move.
My friend took the easy way out and pushed all of his pain upon his wife, 2 children under 10, and friends. That’s pretty selfish from my perspective , but I have no idea how truly bad it was for him. My SIL left two children under 10, also. |

There are some interesting studies on failed suicide attempts. The gist: most don't retry. Even some who survived The Golden Gate plunge (our tour guide in SF joked they "the ultimate failures" and I was the only tourist who laughed) recall saying "Oh no!", as if they regretted instantly what they were doing. I think it's a moment of temporary insanity and from that perspective, I suppose I can have some empathy. But barring only the most extreme mental illness, many of these folks had no right to do this to their loved ones. It isn't always as unavoidable as defenders say |

A buddy of mine committed suicide a couple of weeks ago. Certainly gives you a whole new perspective on it when it hits close to home.
We were at a housewarming party for another friend that Saturday night. I talked to him a lot that night and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. We were talking about our sons' upcoming baseball games including an out of town tournament, laughing and joking, talking about his recent positive job interview, etc. He and his wife left the party and he seemed just fine. He had had a few drinks, but nothing out of the ordinary. His son who is my son's age stayed at the party because he was sleeping over at someone else's house that night who was also attending the party. We left shortly after they did. When they got home, I guess he and his wife got in to some sort of fight and he took off. She went to bed. Guessing he drank more. His wife woke up the next morning to find him hanging in a tree in their backyard. No note, no nothing. Obviously there had to have been some issues, but I think the alcohol had something to do with it. It's a strange mix of emotions...sadness, guilt (Did we miss something? What if something had gone slightly different that night?), and certainly anger as well...how could he have done something like that to his wife and boys? I honestly feel though that it was a spur of the moment decision that if he could, he'd regret. One that forever will impact his wife, his boys, and his family and friends. |

Both, I'm sure. But like I said, he felt pretty positive about his prospects for the job he interviewed for (a post office job as a letter carrier). As it turns out, we found out after the fact that he had indeed gotten the job and they were going to call him that week to let him know.
