This just came out today... rumors of the A-10s demise now appear to be greatly exaggerated, the AF is hotly seeking a contractor to re-wing our 280 or so Warthogs

I retired in 1986 and I read about the "self-guiding" rounds shortly thereafter. Guess they are coming to fruition. I see all these new "weapons" and I can't help but think back to the A Shau Valley in Viet Nam...my God how times have changed....we truly are making killing a "video game" now.. What? Is Sky Net coming?? |

I retired as a CW4 - no stripes. I reenlisted after Viet Nam, (I was a Staff Sergeant) changed MOS from 11B to 351L, went to school at Fort Meade then Fort Huachuca and headed to Germany. Worked at Heidelberg, Mannheim and Berlin. After that, I was stationed at different embassy's from London to Moscow. I always thought it "sort of funny" that back then, Europe was nearly as dangerous as Viet Nam - but few know that. I enjoyed my time in the military, taught me a lot about "the world"...but the advances today in the military - I don't know if I really like them or are afraid of them.. |

What was the dangerous part about Europe, just the fact of being there during the height of the Cold War? |

Counter Intel A lot of young GIs floating in the Rhine, the Neckar and the like. Usually with a bullet in the back of the head. Far too many of them attributed to "training accidents" - yeah, right.....The KGB was as active in West Germany as we were in East Germany..... |

You could probably airdrop a few million poisoned cans of beanie weenies over N Korea and wipe out entire country. Needs to be slow acting so they all get consumed before they start keeling over

Indeed. Both the Stasi and the KGB were extremely active in West Germany during that time period. They had agents working the blackmail angle against young soldiers. I could never understand how in hell, Private "Dumb****" from Bumfuk, Iowa could have ever thought that a beautiful young lady would suddenly fall "head over heels" in love with him - but that tactic was EXTREMELY effective. They were looking for (pretty much) any intel they could gather - from troop strengths to nuclear capabilities to the number of tanks at a particular Kaserne (Army Post). If the GI balked they would begin the blackmail. Usually, but not always, he would end up missing (AWOL) from his unit - then, more likely than not, he would be found hanged, floating in the river, electrocuted, or even outright shot. At the time, however, the general public back home never heard of these things. But they happened quite a bit during that time. Then came Badder Meinhof and all bets were off..... But honestly, it's nothing that we weren't doing at the same time - that, coupled with getting people across the "wall" - we were kept "busy"....... |
