to a 5-year $90M contract, would you want the Chiefs to do it?

I bring this up because it is an incredibly tough choice the Chiefs are having to ponder now. The highest paid corner in the league, Josh Norman, makes $15M per year. I am only estimating, but I would bet that extending Peters will take roughly $18M per year.

I think I would actually do it if I was Veach, and here is why. The sooner we can get it out of the way, the better. We're just buying back prime years. If they extend him now for 5 seasons, he will be 30 years old during the last season of the contract, his 9th NFL season.

Despite the occasional on-field antics, this kid has forced 25 turnovers (19 INTs, 6 FFs) in his first three regular seasons (46 games). TWENTY-FIVE. Absolutely incredible. Good for a turnover more than every other game. He's also had 2 INTs in his 4 playoff games.

I thought after the Jets game, when all hell had broke loose, that we should trade him. But, it seems like his teammates love him, so I don't think he is a 'cancer' by any means. Just very competitive.

Thoughts?

Ok, if it's that easy and you're only losing 1/10th of Peters' production... what corner is going to come up with 23 turnovers over the course of the next 3 seasons when Peters is gone?

Why do we need to worry about that today? As it stands he needs to keep-up that production to stay viable through his franchise tag years. If not, he'll be cheap.

So save the cash and worry about getting a pass rush that'll make him less of a needed asset in the Reid/Sutton defense.

Put your BB cap and and rethink this.

A CB at 90% of Peters is still quite a talent to find. If we get that, then we can talk for sure.

His cap numbers with an extension would actually probably be lower in 2019 and 2020 than they would be if he is franchise tagged. Those are going to be prime years to go out and supplement the roster in FA with Mahomes on his rookie contract, so lower cap numbers for Peters will help that.

Be the Pats... Find a guy dying for a second chance. They might not be Peters, but they will have learned a lesson about being a one-man wrecking machine. So find that outcast man, and he might be willing to be a BB'esque player and just do his job.

Who is that? Are we sure there is a CB like that? My only concern with Peters is his cap #. I don't think his actions will be that major of an issue going forward.

Great points, but still not worth it IMO. He's not committee enough to this team to rest out checking account on. He's an emotional girl with a lot of football talent.

And everybody knows I like sassy players, just not assholes like him.. Hell I didn't have a problem with the flag toss, it was fine in my book.. But the rest if shit.

That's what we have to stop being so worried about when it comes to the CB position. While it makes sense to "suck for Luck", it doesn't make sense for a CB.

I'm missing the analogy here. How does paying Peters compare to trying to lose to improve the QB position? If I'm letting Peters go it's because I already have somebody who can do, as you said, 90% of what he can for much less.

For just talent, hell yes. For some past antics, no. That said, he's become a pretty solid citizen since is suspension. If we don't put ourselves in cap hell over it, I'd say go for it. He’s entering his 4th year of a rookie contract so we can take the fifth year option to keep him for two more seasons at reasonable money, right? No way should we extend him early AND make him the highest paid CB ever. This has nothing to do with antics on or off the field. I like the guy a lot and hope he stays a Chief for a long time, but we can’t keep handing out huge contracts like in the past. If he’s open to a log term contract with a lot of guaranteed money, but at a reasonable rate then sure. If he wants to be the highest paid CB in the league then we should look to trade him after next year. Let a team get his 5th year option cheap and negotiate a long term contract. Get a first and a third pick for him and move on. We’ve struggled to build quality depth of late and I think part of that is having so much money tied up in aging, injured star players. Just think of how much cap space has been sidelined over the last few years. Charles, Hali, Houston, Berry are all high dollar guys who were inactive. Each one of them had contracts that could probably for several FAs of lesser skill. If all these guys were healthy and on the field playing like they were the year before they got paid it would have been fine, but that’s not how it goes. Injury is not a question of if, but when and for how long. I think building a team to have fewer stars (rather star-level contracts), but stronger depth than anyone else is the key. True franchise QBs and HOF-level LTs are the only positions I think you can really afford to overpay.
