Nobody gives a **** about the backup. 99% of seasons end when you lose a franchise elite guy anyway.

It's a really deep FA class for QBs who are career backups. Chiefs shouldn't have to pay all that much for whoever they go with.

You're echoing my previous thoughts and posts to a T... without Smith holding things down and retaining the confidence of Reid and co, we'd have drafted some ****ing bum who would've kept us from going after Money Things have a way of working out, it might not be in the time frame everyone wants... but in my estimation, our acquisition and subsequent 5 year retention of Smith is what put us in the position to go after Mahomes So not only did Smith keep this ship afloat and get it moving in the right direction... he was responsible for us being able to get the most exciting QB of the last 10-20 years As Garth Brooks once opined... sometimes Gods greatest gifts, are unanswered prayers |

As you both mentioned though, it's worked out in the best way possible so far. Thankful for the path that has been taken. |

He cannot be traded until the new League year starts.

Carr probably would have been really good here. Hell, he'll probably turn it around decently with Gruden, at least in the short term. |

As Terez Paylor said if the Chiefs are serious about winning a SB just any ole backup will not due and it is going to cost. To save that $17M we will have $3.6M in dead cap space. Now to sign a decent backup QB will cost around $6M to 9M according to Paylor. Those numbers will leave us with around $8M to $11M in cap space from that one move. That is a very nice amount. If the Chiefs do not get what they want in an offer they may very well try to rework Smiths contract. Doubtful but it is possible.

I'd rather just pay a career backup who will know his role and be ready if he's called upon. |

We have an OL that allowed the 11th fewest pressures in the league and a highly mobile QB with naturally terrific pocket presence.
He's not going to get hurt.
