PFF and Football Outsiders O Line Review - By The Numbers

http://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2018/...ffensive-line/

A few surprises here...

No one has ever confused Fisher with Willie Roaf, but his numbers were even worse than I anticipated

Schwartz coming in roughly middle of the pack giving up pressures

Doc Tardif tied for fewest pressure among guards with the Cowboys Zack Martin, you gotta love that Canadian mfer

- - -

Here is where it gets weird, according to their numbers, hang onto your hats... the Chiefs were #1 in power run blocking, huhwha?

Seems odd though. Sure felt like Witz had plenty of snaps this year.

No matter. That dude was straight ass.. and I need no stats to say it so.

Schwartz was one of the few players on this team making big money that earned his paycheck this year.

In a year that needs a lot of holes fixed, I can't imagine doing all of it efficiently AND also fixing LT. He isn't amazing but considering the other issues I'm fine with him.

Hopefully if we fix G it will have a trickle down effect on Fisher. Is kind of strange that PFF gave the oline such a high grade on power blocking.

YES this.

In an ideal world, you trade Morse for decent value... extend Fulton at C.. and pray these guys stay healthy.

... oh, and FFS, find a good LG ()...

Fisher is sure no world beater, but it seems like in todays NFL... simply being OK is a genuine commodity

Dominant left tackles dont even really exist anymore, Joe Thomas is like some kind of living dinosaur

But yeah, that #1 power run blocking grade doesnt wash at all, in fact it smells like shit... Hunt created more of his own plays than were created for him

SNR brought it up the other day. You don't always need electric game breakers at every position and solid should potentially be the focus of the draft. Maybe in a perfect world LT is one of those positions, but that's probably a problem for another day.

I could be mistaken but I believe there's some confusion on the power blocking statistic. It doesn't mean short yardage or anything like that (which would be ISO or zone blocking typically), but rather just that a 'power' scheme was used, where the guard pulls behind the center and up through the A/B gap to pick up a LBer.

The Chiefs are a little more unique with their power schemes though because they even pull tackles and the center sometimes. It's beautiful watch when they are all working in unison.

You clearly know what to look for, and we're all enriched to learn the nuance of line play from you... but c'mon man, shouldnt all of that intricate scheming result in better short yardage outcomes?

God and Grandpa as my witness, not denying a single word you're saying here... yet where are the results, why do we almost always seem to fail in those situations?

For me, it really just comes down to the types of guys they've been drafting... long and lean (for O linemen anyway) athlete types who lack the thick, powerful bucket and legs to anchor or drive against 300+ pound monsters

Please dont get me wrong, not even trying to dog you or shoot down your take... I'm just tired of seeing those guys get blown off the ball in key situations

We need to find a balance of athleticism and raw power that we simply dont have right now IMO

I've had the same feeling as you for awhile, it seems to the eye that we suck at 3rd/4th and short. Apparently the Chiefs were 1st in conversion percentage in those situations this season though, which is weird.

I think we were really bad with it in 2016, and the blocking didn't improve a whole lot but Kareem did a much better job picking up that one yard.

Their stats on team defense are sad for the Chiefs:

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef

Best stat might be that they can cover a RB better than most. Other that that, it's a poop storm. Not even EB in his prime could fix that mess.

Our offensive line was unreliable. We needed way too much surprise to be successful in the running game.
