either:

1) we actually are alone, because of 'the great filter'

2) we arent alone but the distance is so vast that even with ultimate technology it really isnt feasible to travel to other galaxies or universes

as in the above link, I believe the great filter is the ANSWER to the fermi paradox and also to the question of 'are we alone'?:

The Fermi paradox is predicated on an assumption that all life or intelligence would operate under the same set of rules, instincts, and motives as humanity. It also assumes that any intelligent extraterrestrial lifeforms would be in a shape or substance that is visible - or at least discernible - to human perception.

What if alien lifeforms look and behave like UV rays?

What if alien lifeforms cannot die, therefore have no even understand of what it means to "kill" or "destroy."

What if alien lifeforms are ****ing insects, and there's literally billions of them on earth?

What if they are simply a conscious thought that moves in an out of our minds, exploring and mining, without us ever knowing?

The idea that alien life would be carbon-based, oxygen-breathing, anthropomorphic, organic, hard-shell bodies is laughably egotistical.

There isn't any other element beyond carbon that can form the basis for life.

So hard to accept that a universe that is millions of years old, millions of planets and so incredibly vast that we are the only living beings in the entire place.

I lean in the direction that there is or was life in our fantastic universe.

If you aren't from here, would to come here? Our planet might be deadly to other forms of life.

I believe there is life out there, possibly even in our own solar system. Advanced life, and I think it's a big stretch to call ourselves advanced, would probably avoid an aggressive species such as humans. We can't even figure out how to communicate with the other intelligent life on our planet much less an advanced species from another world.

Which is disappointing, if this is the best evidence to be found from an actual secret government UFO program. The only convincing part is the eyewitness account. Here's the thing about UFOs... we now have a society in which everyone has a video camera in their pocket. We have telescopes scanning the skies at all times. We're still left with grainy lowres video and eyewitness accounts.

This all day long. I suspect there is a UFO button you can push on videos to just add one in at this point.

Yeah, I've read what he has to say. That we should keep hidden so some advanced race doesn't take our planet away from us. This is based on the assumption that life is aggressive and that an advanced race would, as they say in Star Trek, come in peace and shoot to kill.

Science Channel had an interesting take on first encounter. I think it's probably more likely that we would encounter some sort of artificial life sent to investigate.

I still believe that a race advanced enough to get here would probably view us more like we view bacteria; interesting for a short time and them they would get bored and move on to something more interesting.

Realistically, what would we have to offer? The ability to lie, cheat and steal their technology?

99.999% of all galaxies we know about cannot support life. Too hot, too cold, too dense, too young, too old. And that's just the galactic part of the equation.
