In a game the Chiefs lost by six points, Alex Smith missed three wide open TDs

And yes he had a clean pocket on the second one.

When has this happened before...against the Steelers...in a crucial game....

Spoiler!

Flame away.

I'm not a Smith hater, but I think any objective fan can admit Alex has flaws to his game as well. Too conservative. Not a natural moving around the pocket or keeping his focus downfield. Too prone to checking down. Not the strongest arm. But, he's got a ton of great qualities too, which is why KC has won so many games with him at QB.

And, I'll add this: I've been thinking about why it is that Alex has games like this. My theory is that he throws downfield so infrequently that he does not establish timing with his receivers and so when it is needed, he's not sharp. It's not that he can't throw downfield. He made Vernon Davis a PB TE with consistent, accurate strikes downfield. Guys like Brady, Ben and Ryan are constantly taking shots downfield (and frequently missing), but as the game goes on they seem to get more accurate. Smith, by contrast, doesn't go downfield often, so when he does there is typically more riding on the throw, even though he hasn't used the game to settle his timing. Not sure that is going to change with him...but it's my theory.

Because I don't have the time in my day to go through every QB in the draft to show you what you already know: as you go down in the draft, the odds of a QB making it at the pro level go down significantly. Do you really want me to add 2010 1st rounders Tim Tebow and Bradford to that list? Or 2009 Mark Sanchez and Josh Freeman? Oh yeah, I missed 2012 luminary, Brandon Weeden.

Do I really have to answer about deshaun watson? With a total of 6 pro games, he's proven exactly what? Do I have to remind you of Robert Griffin's start in the league? Come on, Pawnbroker. This is just bs arguing for the sake of it. No knowledgeable football fan is going to contest that the odds are not good for any QB not taken 1-2. That doesn't mean they can't beat the odds, but the odds are against them, including Mahomes.

more than half of the QB's starting in the nfl come outside of the top 10

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ootball_League

mahomes is right on that cusp...do you really want to argue about what 'not good chance' is?

is 50% chance of a franchise QB 'not good' to you? We havent even tried taking a top 10 QB in decades....Im OK with a CHANCE at a QB. Please go back and read what I wrote, carefully. I'm not saying to start him now. Youre being a hysterical woman. I will take a swing of the bat here...he looks like someone we should take a chance on to me.

I really dont understand your point anyway..."Too risky to draft a QB"?

We shouldnt be thinking about smith's replacement?

we should have no plan for the future?

It was the exact definition of a team loss from the head coach (why didn't you kick) to the dbs, (knock it down Gaines) to the oline (looking at you cam Erving) to Alex Smith (keep the ball in bounds you bozo) . I hold the Alex Throw to be the most egregious, with the non kick a close second.

only time will tell who is 'correct' here....In my mind here is how I view this:

MOST people, I would say 90% of all of us..agree that:

Alex Smith should be the starter right now...because with him we have some degree (let's call it x%) higher chance to go farther in the playoffs / superbowl.

also I think most people agree that:

Pat Mahomes, while not ready right now....has a higher ceiling and the potential to be a great QB...the QBOTF

so , as far as 'big picture' we are all in agreement....., well if not all, i think the VAST majority of us.

So, then the key disagreement comes from the critical question: At what point do we start Mahomes?

I would say since we already established that no one reasonable is saying to start mahomes now, we actually already agree on this question too. In my mind we go back and look at the X%. As soon as that x% goes to zero (or into the negative obviously) or close to zero, you have to start Mahomes. It really is that simple, and I truly think thats how most people look at it.

I can confidently say this: Alex Smith has gotten every ounce out of his ability as a qb. His ceiling is Pat Mahomes basement. His arm is in the Elway, Farve, Stafford elite category. His scrambling ability is in the Russell Wilson stratosphere. I think he's good to go in 18. But you can't look at guys like DJ, Berry, Hali and tell them you can sacrifice a golden opportunity to win a title and his year at the need to get a rookie qb ready in a trial by fire scenario.

Get your panties in a wad much? Where have I ever said KC should not be preparing for the future, or drafting QBs for the future? Again, you're great at putting your spin on these threads and responses. Talk about straw men!

If you haven't been paying attention, HP started this thread to crucify Smith for his errors against Pitt...it's been a piling on effort by every smith hater since...for what? 60 pages? There is a contingent that wants Smith gone now and for the Mahomes era to begin on the theory that Smith can't win it all, and Mahomes can. You may not be that fan...and if not, I cannot understand why you're being such a sissy about this...but I think those fans are just clueless about football in general. Those same asswipes will be at games booing him for every mistake.

If you haven't understood my point, I'll make it clear to you. Smith has KC in first place. Replacing him with Mahomes can mean a regression to the point that KC doesn't make the playoffs this year, or even next. Those are the odds. If you can't get your head around that, you're more dense than I thought. Now, **** off, spinmaster!

No. Actually it's called knee jerk reaction. Or in the case of some, it's just sitting back waiting for this bad game to say I told you so.

Again, great post spinmaster! Try reading my post 3 above where I said, "There is a contingent that wants Smith gone now and for the Mahomes era to begin on the theory that Smith can't win it all, and Mahomes can. You may not be that fan...and if not, I cannot understand why you're being such a sissy about this." Why, after I write this, would you go on about what you explained to me? If you're not saying that, then accept that I'm not talking to, or about, you, dick. You're not talking for ChiefsPlanet, are you? Who appointed you king dick? Man you have one of the most fragile egos I've ever encountered. I half suspect you're the type who eventually goes postal because you misread everything and use it to get yourself in a lather. Get help. BTW, I'm right. The odds are that Mahomes will never become anything more than a journeyman QB and if he does that, he has beat the odds. Fanboy.

go **** yourself in the BAWAN with an alex smith bobblehead..and I hope the wobbly part falls off in your asshole and you have to go to the hospital to have it removed ,and someone posts the picture on ebaums world

this is EXACTLY why no one likes you or your kind

its not good enough for you that we are waiting and grooming Pat behind smith

its not good enough for you we have given smith the reigns for now

you have to bash on a future Pat Mahomes, who is the hope of this franchise. We all know what odds are. But heres the thing you bandwagon dipshits dont seem to get: we have HOPE for the 1st time in decades that we got a franchise QB. and you come in and want to shit all over it...**** off man.
