ESPN's "problem" is that they're paying $1.52 billion dollars per year for the rights to air Monday Night Football until 2021.

Viewership is down due to cord cutting and ESPN's outrageous cable and satellite rights fees, which has dramatically reduced the money spent by advertisers, their major source of income.

ESPN is slated to release a stand alone app that can be purchased separately from a cable or satellite provider in hopes that they can close the gap. But with all of the changes to their programming, reporters and hosts, it appears they're trying to appeal to younger viewers and not their formerly built in audience.

I doubt it works but time will tell.

On a side note, 2021 will be a very interesting in terms of new TV deals and the CBA. Unless another outlet (say Amazon, Netflix or Hulu) jump into the negotiations, it's quite possible that we see a reduction in Right's Fees, which will in turn negatively affect the NFL Salary Cap and contracts.

Having a contract is apropos of nothing.

Some of the people that have been fired have decided to settle so that they can continue with their careers. Others have not, which means they'll be paid congruent with their contracts but it's extremely likely that they'll be allowed to appear on television with another network.

ESPN bring in $595 million a month in subscriber payments. Let's not pretend for one second that paying 1.5 billion for the NFL rights really puts them out.

The death spiral that ESPN is in is that the content they need to keep/attract viewers... i.e. live sports... costs massive amounts of $$$, in part due to ESPN helping to drive up the cost of rights fees by overpaying for various broadcast rights during the past 10-15 years, thinking that they would always have a wealth of cable/satellite subscriber fees to fall back on.

It's the biggest Rights Fees package in all of television and it's on a cable only network.

In 2011, ESPN peaked when they topped 100 million subscribers. However, in the six years since then, their numbers have steadily fallen, down 12% to just under 88 million in the latest Nielsen estimates, according to Sports TV Ratings.

This is why, for the most part, we're not seeing NFL contracts that guarantee any money after the 2020 season.

The Chiefs have only five players under contract in 2021 and if they're all cut, the Chiefs receive $38.6 million in cap relief.

The Rights Fees and the new Las Vegas stadium are main reason why Derek Carr doesn't have an extension in place and quite honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if they do the same as Redskins and just use the Franchise Tag on him from 2018-2020.
