I loved the Vader scenes. Need more Vader in the movie. I thought the 3rd act was the best Star Wars act ever put on film. Very enjoyable movie. GOAT? I'm not seeing it.

I took my 7 year old son to see Rogue One. He is the same age as I was when went to see Star Wars (ANH) in the theater. He didn't sit on my lap for the entire film, like I sat on my Dad's . (Vader's entrance scared the hell out of me when I was 7.) Most of the finer plot points went right past him, but he thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Good good-guys vs. bad bad-guys.
As for me, this is what I had hoped for episode VII. Just a fantastically entertaining movie. How many movies can keep an audience on the edge of their seats when everyone has already seen the sequel? I found the characters to be compelling, not heroic in an epic sense, but heroic nonetheless. No needless exposition, nothing cute, no characters just for laughs. I really like that it added to Star Wars. More characters who don't know each other, are not related to someone in an earlier film, and show a different, grittier, side of the Rebellion. The effects took a back seat to the story and the action. Lot's of great visuals, but no effects just because. My wife thought the Tarkin came off as the most evil of the villains...ultimately pulling the strings. She felt the actor did a great job bringing the character back. ("Honey, you know he's been dead for 20 years, right?"..."Are you serious?!") Darth Vader's entrance in the final scene made my inner 7 year old want to climb in his dad's lap all over again. Wow!

Saw it today with my sons. So dark and gritty. Some very strategic and highly effective CGI. Loved it! I guarantee you will want to watch A New Hope afterwards.

C'mon.
Just call it what it is... a mash-up of a throwback western / war flick of a suicide mission with a bit of a caper flavor to top it off. I'm not saying that as a criticism, because where Marvel has knocked it out of the park is when they have taken a distinct genre and had a strong script, AND then grafted on the unique characters / universe to work within the story. Absent a biopic the story should always be the lead. Crappy movies invariably start with the premise of a specific scene or sequence and then they hamfist the rest of the story to get to the original idea. I can't believe that they had to do reshoots to add Vader scenes. The original cut must have have basically only Vader's last scene? Imo, as much as I love seeing new scenes with him, he was rather inconsequential. Absent the end, the rest are forced scenes to get him more screentime. I would have preferred they cut them and gotten more creative and explored the Imperial Research Facility. DV doesn't drive the plot- nor was he supposed to until a certain point. All in all. A lot to digest. I can't say I loved it, but not because it isn't good. It's just a very different film and I think I will appreciate it more and more after seeing it a few more times. Major props to them for creating a trailer that doesn't really give much away except that we already know the plans are the aim of the mission. The music was easily the weak link. Probably, IMO, even more a letdown than TFA, simply because they have some great cinema in the can and an A+ score could have punched the movie up into the stratosphere if they had some iconic original pieces. . .

Just got out. Took both my boys 5 and 7, absolutely impressed. I've never got to see Vader on the big screen and it was most impressive.

So I saw it last night and enjoyed it. I tend to overly dissect films that I have high hopes for and couldn't help myself from seeing scenes that really didn't need to exist, thought some of the CGI "characters" didn't work, and thought the simple story got weighed down by detours that weren't necessary. A lot of minor quibbles that added up.
The second viewing I enjoyed a lot more. I just enjoyed the ride and admired the story and the characters a lot more. The droid was the type of Star Wars sidekick that Lucas could only have dreamed of creating for the prequels and the Vader ending was a scene that is memorable and one of the top scenes from the franchise. The only scene that still doesn't hold up to me is the Mustaphar (sp?) visit. I understand the desire for more Vader but the scene is a really flimsy excuse to bring Vader back. But that's just minor fanboy bitching -- all in all a great film, though it would have been fun to see Gary Whitta's earlier version make it to the screen. |

Vader scene... damn.
Score was really meh.. C+ level score, imo. Also, Vader almost sounds Shakespearian when he speaks. EPI-III missed that aspect. |

According to Pablo Hidalgo, this scene was in the script from the beginning, so much so that they alluded to Mustafar in the season finale of Star Wars Rebels Season One: "Mustafar is where Jedi's go to die". I thought that scene carried so many implications that could affect and be explained in future spinoffs.
I hope this all explored in future films but I can't wait to see the movie again today. |

I saw it late Thursday night, so I've had a day to process. First of all, loved it. I think it's the best since Empire. I liked TFA, but after a year and multiple viewings, it has a few warts that I didn't really notice at first. Perhaps this one will, but I highly doubt it. This movie was not made for the kiddies, which was refreshing. First, the main Rebel Cassion Andor was not your typical "good guy". In fact, he's a rather ruthless fellow, apologetically. The end was abrupt and harsh by Star Wars standards, and it needed to be. That was great. I liked that they show a side of the Rebellion that is realistic but never shown before. I loved that they didn't try to shoehorn some connection to the original cast (with the necessary exception of Tarkin and Vader). In other words, we didn't see anybody we really knew fighting for the rebellion. All new characters and story, both compelling and well written. Who knew?
There were a lot of cool cameos that made me smile, if you've seen it you know what I mean. Fan service? Sure. **** you if you don't like it. Heh. The score felt very different, but was not overly distracting to me. I dunno, it was late at night and wasn't on my mind. I'm looking forward to seeing it again. This gives me hope that Disney will not screw up Episode 8. I hope.

We did because I didn't want to wait for the later showing. I'd like to see it without 3D though. 3D has a place and it is pretty neat. But the movie felt really dark and fuzzy. I'm not sure but it felt like a side effect of the 3D. While it was pretty neat I don't think it was necessary.

I'd say I liked it a lot. Not sure if I loved it.
The first hour was a little slow for me and sort of meandered around. The last act saved it and the lead up to a New Hope was perfect Would love to see the process they did on Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher. That was pretty incredible Would also like to know what they reshot and reconfigured. There are shots in the trailers that are not in the film. Like the Tie Fighter staring down Jen
