If you dont go with the big whole home version
Do the portable and put a switch on the house. Dad had one. It ran the furnace, well, tv and indoor lights, lit the gas stove. He was happy. It is a Generac 8000w. I have it now just in case the power goes out. My lines are buried, but the connectors are not. A whole home should run an AC unit. I do not think the portable would.

I would go the whole house route if I were you. If you are borderline on size, step up and invest in the bigger unit.
Use this: http://www.generac.com/for-homeowner...your-generator

I have a Honda in the garage and an Onan in the RV.... Onan makes the best generators ... I would just get an electrician to install you a switch, get about a 5k gen, and a good k1 kerosene heater ... 5k will run lights tv and refridge pretty easily .. if you keep the door closed on the fridge it will stay cold 2-3 days without power

A lot of it depends on how bad/often you need it. Living in BFE on the plains of Colorado the longest I've been out of power was about 3 days after an ice storm took down about 15 -20 miles of lines. We were careful with the frig door and the freezer and we didn't ruin anything but our sanity because you couldn't get the tv or the internet. I did learn to fill the bathtub for toilet water if you've got a storm coming in. That's over 20 years time. I currently own a 5k generator with surge to 6800 and it will run the frig, freezer, lights and tv easy enough. Have to be careful to not have the well kick on at the same as the frig but that's not hard to avoid. Bought it about 10 years ago and have never had to fire it up for real yet. Start it every summer to make sure it still works.
Unless you're a sparky or really good/know elect codes have an electrician do the hook-up/disconnect. Your local power company will not look nicely upon your generator backfeeding into the grid an killing one of their workers restoring your power.
