The Greatest Jazz Albums of All Time

Any jazz fans on here? I'm working on a list of the greatest jazz albums of all-time on Ranker. For those unfamiliar with Ranker, you can simply give a thumbs up or thumbs down to each album based on whether or not you like it (or just leave it blank if you're not sure). Additionally, anyone can add items that aren't already on the list. I've got about 150 albums on the list but I'm sure there are some I forgot. Any suggestions to add to the list?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Some of this stuff I haven't heard, so I'll check it out and add it to the list if I like it.

Good list! Would you go to the link in the OP and vote for the albums you like on that list?

Did, for what was available.

Jazz at the Pawnshop is a woeful omission. If for nothing else than it's mastering

Here's a taste

Ellington Live at Newport should be on the list as well.

A lot of my other favorites are compilations, or not strictly jazz.

Quincy Jones Ultimate Collection and Chuck Mangione come to mind.

I put Live at Newport on the original list, but it's not showing up for some reason. I noticed there are quite a few albums missing and you'll notice some numbers are skipped on the list, so I'm not sure what happened there.

I had never heard Jazz at the Pawnshop before, but I'm listening now and it sounds great. I will add that to the list as well.

La Marseillaise is my go-to Django album.

Especially tracks 1, 2, 7, 11, 17 with 1 and 11 being my favorite Django tunes.

No Art Pepper?? No T.O.P.??? Dude....

Granted, a great list indeed. I think there are some more modern players who need to be on there as well though. Nelson Rangel's "Destiny" album was great for a modern disc.

But Seriously... Tower.Of.Power.

I'm more of a jazz guitarist lover more so than horns or piano and just about anything by Tal Farlow is awesome, as is Joe Pass and Kenny Burrell and George Benson's Breezin' is one of my all time fav's. There are others like Howard Roberts and Herb Ellis that are excellent, as well as the phenomenal Wes Montgomery. Check out the best of Wes on Spotify. It's awesome.

For 70's Jazz-Fushion I really dig Larry Carlton's early work and many of Lee Ritenour's records.

There's a whole universe to explore out there on Spotify. Check it out and enjoy!
It's really, really hard for me to find Jazz that I like. I have to be in the right mood to enjoy Jazz in the first place and then it has to have more (for lack of a better term) structure than I typically find. For instance there are some days that I absolutely love Take Five. Like it is just the perfect music and it oozes through me like smoke through a curtain. And then some of the time I can't stand even 10 seconds of it. It's weird.

Psst, there's a reason my #1&2 are #1&2.

#1 because even though it obliterates conventions, it feels as familiar and comfortable as a handcrafted Adirondack chair overlooking a mountain range. Every time I put it on the platter, I feel like a new day has dawned.

#2 because it's not just a musical performance as an experience. The tinkle of glasses, the applause breaks. On a quality system, you feel like you're sitting smack-dab in the middle of a killer coffee shop set.

And this stuff really does it for me.

Wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't in there somewhere. [2 hrs, WTF?], but if you want female vocals.

As for Coltrane, some day, on the right morning with a perfect cup of joe and not a care in the world, it will hit you.
