The Greatest Jazz Albums of All Time
Any jazz fans on here? I'm working on a list of the greatest jazz albums of all-time on Ranker. For those unfamiliar with Ranker, you can simply give a thumbs up or thumbs down to each album based on whether or not you like it (or just leave it blank if you're not sure). Additionally, anyone can add items that aren't already on the list. I've got about 150 albums on the list but I'm sure there are some I forgot. Any suggestions to add to the list?

I've never gotten as deep into it as I would've liked to. I try to have a working knowledge of it, because it has influenced a lot of the music I listen to the most (prog rock). I learned a lot about great jazz guitarists through the years because of people like Steve Howe, who was greatly influenced by the likes of Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian. |

Cool unrelated note, but catching up on Blindspot, evidently Jane Doe was a jazz fan before her mind wipe. Surprised to see that on a major network show. They usually just push pop.

It's true. There's so much good jazz out there, it's mind-boggling. It's crazy how much music some of these guys made. Guys like Coltrane, Davis, Mobley, etc. were involved in dozens and dozens of albums.

Glad to see Duke in the #1 spot.
Really surprised that Django Reinheardt didn't even sniff a spot on the list... even way down low. Dane, I'm sure you are already familiar with Django but if by some weird stroke of bad luck you arent... check him out. |

I would think any guitarist worth a shit is familiar with Django. And if they're not, then they're not worth a shit.

I've heard of Django but never actually heard any of the music. Any albums you'd recommend to check out first?

No love for Jazz Fusion in that list would have thought Herbie Hancock might sneak in there. Myles Bitches Brew way down the list but I got no problem with The Count meets the Duke being at the top. There is a lot of very good young Jazz artists playing jazz this list seems skewed mostly to the old legends.

Pat Metheny 3 gold records 20 Grammy awards all kinds of acclaim in Jazz circles and from KC. Not to be found on this list.

It doesn't take much to move an album up right now. I just gave a thumbs up to "Birth of the Cool" and it jumped about 15 spots. So jump aboard your faves.

Some other completely random stuff I'd recommend is Ella and Louis, Bob Curnow's big band arrangements for Pat Metheny's First Circle album and anything by trombonist Carl Fontana. Most have probably heard the first, but I doubt many know the second or third.
Fan of modern big band, too. Whether it's the aforementioned Curnow's LA big band, or Jon Fedchock's big band, or Maria Schneider's band, or Gordon Goodwin's big phat band, or Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, there's some cool arranging over the last twenty years that probably not many people know. Many other bands I could name, too. And last but not least, Sinatra at the Sands, with count basie, is hands down one of the coolest albums ever put on vinyl. |

I don't know nearly enough about jazz, but I see only one Mingus appearance on there. Also, Jazz at Massey is a tremendous album that I would put up there.
