We have $.
Cut Grubbs, Fanaika, Cooper and Kovacs for $4.5m. Restructure Colquitt to get at least $2m. That would put us around $36m. Smith-$9m Berry-$9.5m DJ-$4m Abdullah or Branch-$1.5m DeVito-$2m That's $26m. Offer Allen $3m (11th amond LG's) and if he refuses let him walk. We can make that work |

Yeah, we absolutely could get it done, but the question is whether or not we should. I'm still not convinced there.

Couldn't disagree more. I'd rather gamble on Conley's development and draft another WR, than lose Smith for one of those average WR's or Lane.

But my point is that we can keep him of we absolutely need to. |

If we are looking at receivers, I'd look at guys like Travis Benjamin...or swing for the fences and take a shot on a guy like Blackmon or Gordon. Or fill with cheap guys that can get open like Nate Washington or Lance Moore. |

Actually I suspect Sanu will resign but Randle is fools gold, lot of measurable talent but just cant get shit right in his head. Only WRs that interest me are Rishard Matthews, even though we have that type of guy already, or Anquan Bolden, who will likely still want significant $, more than he's worth. |

Personally, I lean towards finding the next unpolished gem and using the surplus to continue improving the depth on the roster. It's roster depth that got us through this season and I think it's what will eventually put us over the hump (if we ever get there). I'm just pointing out that it's not Smith or bust. Smith's money could be allocated to players that help this team and help it quite a bit. It could also be used to get us younger as some of our key players start to get nearer the end of their effective careers. This game is getting younger and younger every year and it never hurts to follow suit.

i'm on record that shawn smith is a bit overrated, and we should let him walk for the $ he's gonna find elsewhere.
I definitely look at the LA rams FA corners, Jenkins or Johnson, they won't resign them both. Could be looking at a lower cost and younger player than smith and more dynamic. Smith was just stick in the mud too often. |

Jenkins is a worse version of Peters. He gambles way too much and ends up committing costly penalties to cover when he blows an assignment.
If nothing else, that's one way that Smith perfectly complements Peters. He's a positionally sound player that will occasionally jump routes (all players do) but more often than not is simply content being where he needs to be to knock the ball away. If you have two riverboat gamblers outside, you're risking a busted coverage on one side or the other virtually every play. If you've going to have a guy like Peters trying to bait the QB on one side, I like the idea of having a more conservative, steady CB on the other side.

You could take Smith's 10 million and get another corner and another wr/te/lb etc.
Sean is great, but he's a great press man corner. When he can't get his hands on guus he tends to struggle. Once some of his speed goes, he's done. I think corners like him hit the wall hard. It likely won't be next year, but it's coming. |

The entire roster is a matrix. You're not given X amount for CBs and Y amount for LBs, etc...; you have what you have and that's it. What we'll have is enough to probably keep Smith but it's going to come at a cost, both in terms of ability to immediately upgrade our offense and likely in terms of keeping some younger players on the roster long-term. How much we're presently spending on CBs is irrelevant to that discussion.
