MFJ Preseason #3 thoughts

Disclaimer: This was against Tennessee. But we also won't be playing AZ or Seattle

Offensively this is the best they've looked. Not unexpected really considering this is considered the dress rehearsal for the week 1. Glad the rain held off til the end. We got some good work in.

Oline was solid. I'll re watch the game and look at each olineman separately.
Opened up some nice holes for our backs. Kush had a nice downfield block.
Only a couple penalties. The one on Grubbs in the red zone sucked because we ended up settling for a field goal. 0 sacks is always good to see.

Alex Smith was solid. Couple misses. The Kelce one was bad. Would've been a TD likely. Overall he was really good. He looked confident and stood in the pocket for the most part. No panic and that's what I wanted to see. Made some nice throws. Especially to Maclin on his TD.
RBs looked pretty good. I ****ing love me some West. This kid can play. Has great hands, good speed and vision. Has some deceptive power running the ball. I liked what I seen from Reeves also. Couple nice short runs. Good power.

TEs were solid also. Kelce is going to be a beast. Awesome speed for a TE. Love this kid. Ryan Taylor had a couple catches. Between the WRs and the TEs they caught the ball really well. Have been all preseason.
WRs were good again. Tough cuts upcoming. I really like Fred Williams. He's got nice hands and speed. I'm hoping he makes the team over Avant. Hammond sealed his spot IMO. His special teams play locks him in. I'd like to see Maclin, Wilson, DAT, Conley, Hammond, and Williams. Cut Avant and he'd be available as a free agent later if need be. Not sure there's a ton of teams eyeing him.
I liked what I seen from Conley. I like his deep pass ability because his unique speed and size will cause problems. You saw it on the DPI. I look for him to get plenty of snaps next Thursday.
Wilson had a nice catch. Glad he's ok.

Murray looked alright. Bad INT on a play that wasn't to be made. Made some nice throws but some bad ones. To be expected with him. Like his upside. Had some short passes that were too low and he was bailed out. The 3rd and goal play call I didn't like. I'll look at it again but I would've liked to see him throw it in the end zone. I know there was pressure that may have had a lot to do with the decision to throw it to a back. Great to see him bounce back after the INT and finish with 2 TDs. One of which was absolutely gorgeous. The TD throw on the run to Williams was nice. He's got a long ways to go if some think he's a "QBOTF." Look forward to next weeks game for him. I was saying to myself, "Man, I hope Andy puts him in the rest of the game and one drive with the ones." Glad Andy obliged lol.
8/10 on third downs (?) was great to see.

Defense: Solid again. This group has a chance to be special. Not saying '85 Bears or '00 Ravens, but really good. Run d is improving without Poe and some vets back. Man I ****ing love Jaye Howard. (Get this man re-signed ASAP Dorsey). Howard had some flash plays. The one in run d was Poe-like. Couple guys I don't know names so I'll use #s. #93 had a couple flash plays one which looked like he was held. Not for certain though. Nick Williams flashed on some QB pressures. DJA had a flash play on a run stop. Can't remember if he made the tackle but know he was in the backfield.

Ramik had a pretty solid night. He's getting better each week. I like his potential and glad he's getting reps with injuries to the ILB core.
The run d overall was ok they did give up some runs. Can't wait to get Poe back. The run d TD was weak. Miscommunication going on there. Wasn't very good but overall they were ok.
Pass rush was solid overall. Ford flashed yet again and drew the face mask. His first step and burst off the edge is really something to be excited about.
Secondary gave up some plays but they'll be ok. Liked Cooper and had a nice pass breakup. Branch had a couple break ups.
Peters had the pass break up on the under throw but wasn't playing the ball. He's going to be really good. Just hope he doesn't get beat deep too much early. I'm really high on him.
Zombo had the nice INT. Nice seeing him make a play.

Special Teams coverage was good yet again. Couple nice sticks by Williams, Brown and #47. Williams also came close on his punt block attempt late.
Santos was a little shaky. I'm not worried about him yet though. He started slow last season and finished strong.
Hammond with a good PR.

Overall this was the result I wanted to see and hoped for. Kicked the shit out of a bad Tennessee team that kicked our ass last season. Offense was in control all night. Defense held their own against a kid I like in Mariota. Got to him early and often.
Now I'm not scout nor know all about technique and schemes and shit (though I'm trying to learn) so I'm sure I'll get ragged on some for my analysis. But I'm curious in regards to input. I stayed up all night to watch this and make my first ever write up or half ass attempt to

To get out of this week with minimal bumps and bruises is also. Wilson has 2 weeks to heal that shoulder.
This team has some tough cuts to make. All props to Andy, John and their scouts. Waiver seven still has a few here and are contributing. ****ing Dorsey is running laps around Pioli as a GM IMO right now. This team has a great feel and are tight. Love the chemistry we seem to have on and off the field. Hope our injured guys heal, rest up and come back strong.

Will edit some things I'm sure in here as its 6:30 and I'm tired.

Don't crush me too hard lol

P.S. I can't wait for March to come back. This LB core could be the NFLs best. I'm as excited for three UDFAs as some other vets and rookies. I know Wilson and West aren't rookies but UDFAs nonetheless last season.

I think Allen is more ready than LDT, but he's not as athletic and mobile, while Kush is also more ready, and has a better grasp of the line calls than Morse.

I think Reid is going to be willing to suffer the early season growing pains, because their upsides are so much higher.

Getting them in early might pay off as the season progresses.
I just don't want to see LDT starting early. I'd like to see him sit some more, but I'll trust them on this. As long as Fanaika is cut, I'm good lol.

I agree. It is going to be interesting to see how they graded out. We will have someone open every play this year-it will be a pick your poison type of team.

We will see how they stack up to start the year- Titans D is light years away from Texans and Donks.

I sure couldn't see anyone get a hand on it, but it was definitely a weird ball. Just kind of fluttered out into the middle of nowhere.

That was 77 Taylor Lewan, T 6-7 309 Michigan. He grabbed Hali's face mask the series before and got away with it.

Alex Smith already trusts this receiving corp more than any of our previous ones.

I saw him pull off of a RB check down because he trusted Maclin to get open.

Ford, against Russel Okung, who isn't quite as good as some make him to be, but still pretty good, made him his bitch.

Especially on the sack he missed. Which is still mind boggling he got killed for missing that on Russell frappin Wilson.

They only showed one replay-so it was hard to tell. Green was pretty adamant that it was. Pretty bad miss if not. How the hell was Kelce so wide open?

Very happy all around. The miss to Kelce was a head scratcher, I do believe the ball was ever so lightly tipped, as it was wobbling after it went over the DL, but the replay really didn't show it being definitely touched. I'm with Trent on this, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Murry, nice recovery from the stupid INT. He was just trying to make a play, and made a horrible young kid mistake. That's cool, he'll learn.

It was nice to watch a game in which I felt confident the whole time. They all just seemed to click very well.

The story of this pre-season to me has been DEPTH! Wow, they are going to have a helluva time deciding on many of these cuts, which is a good problem to have.

Lastly...I thought McCluster looked kinda decent, considering his size, he had some good runs and didn't go down immediately like he seemed to when he was a Chief. Not a game breaker, but he seemed a little more legit. Good for him I guess.

This WR core has been catching most everything thrown at them. It looks like we have enough fire power to compete with any team in the NFL for once. Yes it is preseason, but we were dominating them last night.

I am willing to bet anyone $1000.00 that Alex will convert a TD to a WR this year. I think that streak will end week one.
