Semi-hypothetical: do you turn yourself in?

This story was on the news tonight: http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_28...-by-apparently

To save you the trouble of reading it, a family was camping in a national forest, and a stray bullet from some recreational shooters killed one of them. It was apparently a high-powered rifle, and the presumption is that it wasn't intentional. The area is popular with recreational shooters, and someone apparently fired a round in the woods that was really unlucky.

The question marks in this story are:

1. Shooting is not allowed within 150 yards of a campsite, though it's not clear if the family was at a formal campsite. For that matter, maybe the ban isn't just for formal campsites. The article doesn't explain the specifics.

2. There has been some friction with shooters in the general area recently, and an occupied Jeep was hit last year, prompting a ban on shooting in an area not too far from this area.

3. We don't know at this point if the shooter even knows that he/she shot someone. They may have no idea where their bullets were landing.

So my question to you is, assume that you are the shooter. You didn't go out into the woods with any malice, but you were shooting and a person is dead. What do you think are the odds that you'll get away with it? Do you turn yourself in, or do you lay really, really low and pray to every deity of every religion that you won't get caught?

Multi-part poll to follow on full automatic.

That is about the opposite way I would think. If I had a family, Id be more willing to turn myself in, to teach a lesson to my family that if you are a dumbass you will get punished. If Im single, theres no real reason to turn myself in. Nobody in my family would know what I did or where I was at, so it only effects me. Im already feeling terrible and guilty now that I found out on the news that someone was dead. What advantage is there of turning myself in? Im going to feel guilty the rest of my life regardless. Id probably lay low, not frequent that area again, and act like I never noticed the news. Never fire a gun again. Eventually make a sizeable anonymous donation to the family. Turning yourself in accomplshes nothing in this case except punishing yourself even more when you dont necessarily have to.

The "but my family!" angle as the reasoning for not turnng yourself in is bullshit. Its just a way for some of you to try to rationalize what you would do. Trust me, your family would do just fine

This is why I wouldn't. I could do the time, if any, but I'm not volunteering to get wiped out financially over an accident.

In this day and age, with the idiocy in our government, court system, ect the less entanglements you can have with them the better. Honesty doesn't pay anymore. I say lay low, and if they get you claim you had no idea that happened. Our government and court system are incompetent, flawed and corrupted. The less you deal with those types the better.

The degree of negligence is tough to gauge. WTF is "recreational shooting"? A rifle range?

A shooting range would have a earthen berm backstop. Why in the world would the State or County allow target shooting to be so unregulated on public property. Or was this private property? Also why would anyone want to camp in close proximity to shooting enthusiasts seems like all the shooting would drive you nuts.
This still doesn't excuse the dumbass shooting to an area he doesn't know whats there. This is complete negligence and my guess is the dumbass would not turn himself in or feel any remorse for what he did.

This is a rare poll where the results are changing. We started out with a majority turning themselves in in Scenario 1, and half doing so in Scenario 2. Now it's 50/50 in Scenario 1 and a minority doing in Scenario

This is why I voted to lay low in both instances. While it was an obvious accident....I don't trust the courts to not completely **** me over.

No way I turn myself in. Yeah, I'd feel bad but I'd rather feel bad not in jail than in jail.
How do I know some over-zealous prosecutor won't turn it from an accident into something more sinister?

Because your a lowlife pos scumbag.

Its not accidental if you fire away into somewhere not knowing what's on other side.

But this explains a lot about what kind of moral fiber your made of. Also not at all surprising.
