Ned said before the game he wanted around 80 pitches. 81 through 5 innings and he just walked the bases loaded so he was obviously losing it a little bit. No way he could have lasted the whole game. Great outing though! Hope that pushes Vargas and Guthrie to step it up.

Beating Detroit on a suspension game is huge. Hell, beating Detroit is huge.

He wasn't going to throw a complete game no matter what, so it doesn't matter. This team is too good to put a single player's potential accomplishment ahead of the team's best interests.

Trey Hillman destroyed Gil Meche's career. He was a good pitcher before that, and he was horrible after that. He retired because of his arm and back problems that began on that day. Trey Hillman should have been shot for that. We need Chris Young. Let's not destroy his arm in the pursuit of a meaningless stat. |

The Herrera/Cabrera battle in the 8th inning was pure awesome.
Baseball doesn't get much better than that

1. Chris Young: 5ip 9k 0hits. Dayton's ouija board working overtime lately.
2. Colon's range isn't near what AE's is, but he's got great hands out there and he can make routine plays at SS. Wasn't sure he could - that play on Gose in the 8th was outstanding. Guys who can play both middle IF positions are very rare. 3. Infante continues to be a problem. His OPS is 600 and he went 66 AB without taking a single walk to open the year. The manager needs to have a chat with him about wasting so many AB. It's almost impossible that 66 straight times, the pitcher was able to avoid a walk. Not even Greg Maddux could pull that off. Needs to get his act together. 4. Herrera obv struggled in the 8th but I'll give him tons of credit for getting out of it. Those are 2 excellent hitters who could've won that game for them. He worked his ass off vs Cabrera and I'm glad he went nothing but fastball because he was almost guaranteed to walk him if he didn't. (Monty said after the game he's have gone changeup because walking him was better than letting him actually hit the ball - not sure i agree) |

Nearly every SS can play second base. What's rare about that?
Agree on point 4. Jeff went full idiot there. You don't walk the lead run on base and the tying run into scoring position with Martinez on deck. Worst case scenario, Cabrera puts them up 1.

I remember a game where David Cone was coming off a DL stint and the Yankees pulled him out of no hitter because they didn't want to extend him too early. It's not unheard of.
Maybe Ned could've left Young in longer, but the reality is 40% of our starting rotation was suspended. We'll need Young to bail us out again in a few days. |

The only play that a 2B had to make that a SS doesn't is the pivot on the DP. I played second base for over a decade...and played it very well. I didn't have the range for SS, while every SS I ever played with could have filled in at 2B and done fine.
