Help finding my son a new car

My sons 2000 Ford Explorer front wheel completely froze up and destroyed the brakes and there is a problem with the rear axle too. Repair cost is over $1000 and I'm not paying that. Time to look at a new car for him.

Who were the resident dealers on this site again?

Here are the cars he is looking at. Any opinions would be great as I have had it with car shopping these last few years.

Well if he couldn't have afforded anything more what were you supposed to do? I had $500 jalopy after $500 jalopy that only ran half the time while sinking money into them right and left, and rarely getting a year out of any of them. Hell I think I had gone through at least a dozen cars by the time I was 25. Yes it sucked but I learned a lot about cars and because of it I rarely have to take a car in to get repaired.

Never seen one fail like that that didn't make an ungodly noise for quite some time
No,a brake pad busted and caused the caliper to grind and eventually seize. How he never noticed it is beyond me.

Yeah, that should have made a little noise prior to locking up too, lol.

Good learning lesson, if it's making a noise get it checked out. He probably could have fixed the broken pad cheaply and then started looking so he wasn't behind the 8 ball with no wheels.

Sorry for hijacking this thread, Guru. I've noticed in my time here at CP that happens a lot from me. I don't mean to do it so please take no offense. It's just easier than starting a new thread about similar topics.

Hope your search goes well since you need a car now and I don't have a timetable to sell this thing. And yes, it's a timing chain from anyone who's wondered. HIJACK!

Its cool, I just wish I could have taken advantage of your car. Had I realized it was in Arizona I wouldn't have shown it to my kid. Live and learn. heh

You've made comments to me before about the heat or being in Arizona I am pretty sure? I was assuming everyone knew the location of "The valley of the hot as ****?!"

You'll find something. Just takes lots of research and hours as you already know.

From my decade+ of experience in the car biz I have seen plenty of older saturns with high mileage and running decently then. A car is worth what someone is willing to pay. Some people buy that low mileage 16 year Saturn and drive it for 100k with reliability while others buy a turd (OP sons vehicle) and have nothing but problems.

If the Saturn you talk about was clean and I was in the market I would consider it because of the potential cost of ownership.

I'm not always able to keep everyones place of residence straight when I haven't met them in person.

A mechanic I know just told me to stay away from the Ford Focus. He works for Ford too.

Same with the Fusion. I was picking between that and an Altima. The Altima is miles better than the Fusion.

Fords, to me, gets that 'loose' feeling rather quickly.
